  1. That's funny, Todd!

Alright, so what do you guys think:

  2. Looks good from here!

  3. It's huge, 17 and 3/4 inches.
I think I'll cut the column down another 3/4 to 1 inch.

Would like to see the column splice you make.
'57 pickup box's have a pitman arm with ford tie rod hole instead of the ball.
    It worked better for me.

  5. Greaser, not sure what you mean with column spice? You talking about the column drop where it attaches to the dash?

I got a shock drag link that I'll use half of, and then use DOM tubing and 7 degree rod end on the wheel side.

Sorry, I thought you were grafting the olds steering shaft to the F100 steering shaft to use the olds wheel.

  7. Just got back in from the garage. Here is todays work:

Got the steering box mount almost done. Just missing to top piece:
But I need to relocate the wishbones in order to clear the pitman arm.

    Column drop:

    And from the front:

Do you guys think the wheel is up too high?

  8. Go man go! Wheel placement looks good to me. Can you see the gauges ok?

  9. I'll have to put the bench back in to be sure, but I think it'll work pretty good.

Today, one year ago, I made the first test drive in my truck.
Since then I put 2542 miles on it and got an average gas milage of 11.68MPG.
Good thing the gallon is under $3 around here again :D

But I sure had a good time!
Thanks to all of you who shared the road with me. I had a blast!
    Can't wait for next year.

Somehow I have missed this build and I finally discovered it tonight. It sure does make me feel good to see the younger generation building using "Old School" techniques. As an old greybeard, I won't worry about passing the torch as long as there are youngsters like you out there to carry it. Nice build and great videos.

  11. Thank you, Sir. That means a lot!
I stopped for gas one day and an older guy came over, looked at my truck and told me how much He liked it. That made my day.

  12. Put in a lot of work that doesn't really show, but now I got something worth posting.
The new F100/Olds steering setup is almost done.

The angle of the drag links is a little extreme, but I've seen lots of cars setup this way.
Can anybody speak from experiance and post the pros and cons?
Would link to hear about it, before I cut and weld the drag link.

    Thanks for looking.

  13. Looks good to me. If you flip the hoop over you could run the tie rod end up from the bottom and decrease the angle a bit. That of course is assuming nothing is in the way?

  14. Its funny, because when I first put that hoop on the backing plate, I didn't even realize that there is a tapered hole in it.
I just remember that it was a pain to in stall it an the lower steering arms. That's why I was hoping I'd not have to change it.

I was thinking about using the 7degree rod ends on the tie rod too, in case the steering issues don't get resolved which this change.
With means I could change it all at one time then.

  15. Looks great Martin!

  16. Haha! I must stop skimming before I post!!

  17. Here's mine. Seems to work fine.

Oh, and I haven't forgotten about our little "project" guys. I'm trying to get a few things finished up first.

Wow, it has been a couple years since I visited this thread, and read every page.
Your truck looks great! I really like the stance, and bench seat.

  19. Thanks guys!

I've been busy with my new Olds, but figured I owe it to you guys to keep this updated as well.

The reasons to pull the motor were:
    * get the motor leak fixed
    * get the leaking tranny fixed
    * add PCV system

    So here it goes, PCV:

    New tranny pan:
Didn't realize that TH400s from 1965 were different from newer models, so the pan I ordered is like 3/4 of an inch deeper. had to space the motor up a little in order to clear the crossmember I put right underneath the tranny.

Removed the intake and replaced the builders crappy silicone seals with the real seals:

So after these changes, the motor was ready to go back in the truck.

After some sweating the F100 box clears, but barely.

Finally time to hook all the wires and gages back up. FUN.
And put the seat back in.

    Almost back together:

And then the day after I got the truck running again (without leaks so far) I brought his older brother home:

    Good work Martin!

  21. Martin,
They both look great. Are you driving both the truck and car to the Jalopyrama?

  22. Nice work so far man! I Love the Roadrunner horn too

  23. Thanks guys!

Dave, I haven't been driving it long (fast) enough yet. Just up and down the driveway.

Gary, not sure. Maybe just the car?

Monster, funny story with the horn. I wanted it because of the sound obviously, but when I hooked it up, it just sounded like a regular horn. Well I guess I got ripped of there. Now I'm planning to just paint it black...

I believe that along with the horn, there was a control box that gave it the "beeb/beeb" sound. Cekc with the restorers.
Great Truck! makes me want to get back on to my 40.

  25. With the Moonshine Run coming up 5/17, I decided it was time to work on the hood for my truck again.

First I had to fill the holes in the top, that I had cut out a long time ago to clear my old carb.

Then I realized the the grill is missing the hinge support bracket, so I fabbed one up yesterday.

Found some scrap metal and made a fixture (yeah I know it's just the vice from my drill press), and put it in my arbor press.

I used 1/4 5/16 inch rods to form the bead.
On the final step I used my welding clamps the get the right depth.

Then I made up the second piece:

Put them together to mark hole location and final size:

    Getting pretty close:

Special fixture to get the cuts right:

    And back on the car.

Now I just need to fill the back side and I'm off to the next step. Putting the hood tops together.

  28. Thanks guys!

I've been busy with the truck to get it ready in time, so here is the update:

Got the two tops halves welded together:

And added the 2.5 inch extension:

    Same thing to the sides:

Decided to relocate the hinges to move them closer to the grill:

    Final product:

After a test drive without problems it was time put put some color on it:

Also picked up a set of '40 steelies:

Cleaned them up and had a friend of mine powder coated them:

After getting them mounted I was finally ready for the trip. Just in time.

Here are some pics from on the road:

We were having a great time! I was really glad I had the hood done, because it was raining at least half of the way.

Next I have to figure out how to mount my '55 Olds hub caps. Stay tuned!
