painting seatbelts?

Im looking to paint the seatbelts in my 51 chev. They are brown and I would like to go either black or white. I was just wondering if there is some type of paint I could use on the fabric instead of having to find new belts? can I just use any oil based spray can or will thay ruin them?

Buy new ones.

 

Spray paint will look bad and feel bad. You can dye them. It would be easier and not much more expensive to just get new ones.

 

X2. any paint that would work would weaken the fabric. They are there to save your life. Not the place to cheap out.

Rit has been used, you gotta use hot water and dye a couple times.

You can't "paint" cloth because over time it will chip off due tothe flexing, but you can "dye" the clotha darker color or put it in pure bleach to remove color.
Be sure not to keep it in the bleach too long and it eats away at the belt material.

Buying new is safer and easier in the long run.
Look for sale deals at Speedway Motors, Summit Racing, Jegs or Juliano's in Ellington, CT.

 

Besides, if you do dye them - you'll always wonder if the dye is going to rub off all over your bitchin new T-shirt you just bought.

SEM dye works well, doesn't leave them crusty. Can't go lighter, go black.
Me? I'd just replace them. Juliano's has them, meets gov't specs.

 

I used SEM dye on the belts in our Olds, they were tan, we changed them to black. It's been probably five years since, they now are black with a slight hint toward dark grey.

 

I have successfully dyed grey seatbelts black with RIT fabric dye

 

Did the dye to lighter colored belts to dark (black)
but never dark to light

 

These are for sale on the HAMB and look like 50's-60's style and at a pretty decent price.

are MADE IN THE USA.

 

....and don't modify or weld on a chassis, steering components, brakes etc. Also, never add more horsepower than your car came with from the factory, and never drive above the speed limit..........

 

correct me if i'm wrong, but i've always heard that bleaching weakens fabric.

 

Seats belts (esp. lap belts ) are prob one of the cheapest parts of a build and something I would def want new. Step away from the rattle can and the dye and order you some new belts. - Mayor

 

YES it weakens!
Buy new.
