I have a 51 flattie with both an electric fuel pump and mechanical fuel pump installed. Don’t need both right… so I want to go ahead and remove the mechanical pump. I saw some where you need to block the hole where the fuel pump rod comes out or you will loose oil pressure. My questions are:

    1. Is there a complete kit for this (plug, gasket and block-off plate)?
    2. If not, what type of plug do I need (pics would be VERY helpful)?
    3. Where can I get the plug

    Thanks fellas,

    Ron

The 8ba has an oil bleed hole in the bushing to lubricate the pushrod, so you will lose some oil pressure. I don't know of a "store bought" plug or kit to block the hole. Anything the same diameter as the pushrod inserted into the hole should block it. Just needs a little innovative thinking.

Thanks fellas...I really DID do a search before I asked. Perhaps I should look a little harder.

I made one on my vertical mill (drill press) out of aluminum. JB welded that sucker in place....done.

I cut the pushrod off short of the cam,...and at the upper end, just enough for the pump block off plate to hold it in place; Works fine. Mine is an 8BA block, bit it ought to work on 59A as well. Easy, and free!

Customrod48..... Flatheads have REAL "valve covers" !

  9. On my 8ba, I used a 7/16x 1 1/2 bolt. I first filed the sides a bit, to give it some teeth so to speak (knurling). It fits nice and snug, and doesn't go anywhere.

Searches are only good with the right key words.

If in rebuilding a flathead with a electric fuel pump, you can put the pushrod bushing in to block off the oil port by offsetting it. But you are not rebuilding.

You will not lose any pressure. The only reason you might want to put something in the hole is to keep it from spraying excess oil in to the valley.

Are you sure flatjack? the 8BA I just built had a 3mm (1/8") hole there! I would expect a hole that large at the end of the main oil gallery would lose some pressure..was this hole in my block not standard?

By the way, the earlier motors didnt have the hole, had a bush instead, and was lubricated with mist/splash.

You will lose oil press, with nothing in there.

Nope that small hole won't harm oil pressure guy's over on the ford barn do it all the time but it will spray about and cause a mist that will come out the breather.Just machine up a aluminum plug with a small head on it so you can't press it in too far make it a .0005" interference fit tap it in and drive on.Only needs to be 3/4" long. You could also have an internal thread on it so you could get it out again without a problem.

You can't offset an 8ba bushing as it has a groove on the outside of the bushing that goes all around outside that's where the oil goes to get in the small oil hole for push rod...Different from a 59a pre 48 motor.
