After selling my last custom because it was too big and too new (1952), I picked up a 36 three-window ford. I know many consider 36’s to be a custom only, but I am hoping to build it with inspiration from Bob Pierson’s 36 so it won’t be a tail dragger.

I am not sure on chopping it yet, I will probably get it driving in primer and wait to do final paint and interior until I decide on whether to cut it or not. The body needs some patch panels but is almost dent free, with almost no heavy pitting. I got an original 36 frame and suspension with juice wide fives to replace the street rod frame under it now. It will be all old ford, dropped axle etc. I haven’t decided on exactly what motor and trans to run, but I would really like to keep the torque tube so probably no T5. I have an 8ba runner that I could put in it. The firewall is inset 3-4” and I am not sure if I will leave it or not. Does an 8ba fit with an original firewall?

Sorry for the crappy pictures, I have it packed away for the winter.

Well, I know '36 Ford 3 windows are pricey to get into, plus you had to start over with the frame. You must be dedicated! Good luck with the build. My favorite 3 window!

I like your plans for it. Somewhere in the archives I have a photo of a black 36 coupe at Bonneville in 1998 I think that wasn't chopped but had skirts and really spun my wheels. I'm trying to finagle a five window shell off a guy who has it as a yard ornament but so far I haven't come up with anything he wants to trade for.

Josh you crazy son of a bitch!!!! Yeah man I always love your vision for things and this thing is going to be awesome!!! Is that the new garage? Still have the '32?

What about converting the 8ba to a 59a style with earlier water pumps and distributer so you don't have to kill the firewall? If not trade that 8ba out for a 59a since it'll be worth it.

    Keep me posted!!!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I won't get much done besides gathering parts over the winter since I need to finish up my garage build and finish a bunch of projects in the house.

I think everyone thinks I am crazy except for me ME!

Yes that is the new garage, I will email you some pics. As for the 32 look carefully in the last picture. I plan to get this in primer and enough interior to drive it, then work on the 32. With all the metal work to do on the 32 and the chop, it will help me decide if I want to chop this 36. Plus I will be able to drive it unchopped to see how I like it.

As for the motor I will definitely convert the 8ba or get a 59a. Right now it has a recessed firewall but it will be easy to put in an original firewall and go back to the original floor board layout. I hate the 90 degree floor transition that it has now with the recess.

    Cool ..... happy to help

    BTW
Contrary to what others think the 8ba will fit with a generator mounted fan …… iv found a way and am close to having it done on my 35 three window.

Definitely hot rod it. Leave the tail draggers to the 40s and 50s cars.

    PERFECT.

When I saw the title of the thread I honestly thought to myself, "Please not another 36 3-window tail dragger". Best looking car Ford ever made. I'll be following this build.

A 36 3 window anyway you build it is cool all except street rod style. I have a 36 3 window that maybe some day I'll get done.

I am partial tp the 36 Ford 3 window also. I like em as tail draggers or hot rods.

    Enjoy!

nothing wrong with a hot rod coupe,I drive my merc when i fell like tail draggen, just put a hemi in it and c-notch the rear then you can have the best of both worlds
