Hey, Guys I am trying to buy a mid 50's superior bodied short bus, the bus has no engine or tranny in it. I am needing a idea of how much it weighs, so I will know if my truck and trailer can handle it. The little bus is not much if any longer than a suburban, but I want to make sure before I make the long trip. Thanks

i dont know, i rode it everyday growing up but never thought to ask. i was usually more worried about getting my helmet on straight and not making wet pants.

reason I asked for pictures is so we can tell what size of truck it is. Probably bigger than a half ton, but is it a one ton? 1.5 ton? or what? The heavier duty the truck it's built on, the more it will weigh.

Will it be used for long hauls or 'short' trips?

I will get a pic up tonight, 4 or 5 rows of seats, no seats in it and no engine or tranny.

I would say less than a long bus with no engine or trans. That thing is probably more than a tonner. I'd bet 1-1/2 ton or so. How heavy of axles does your trailer have? Lippy

it should have a manufacturer's plate some where on the body, who's the manufacturer?some companies build a little heavier than others, =Wayne,Bluebird,Thomson,Superior, there's maybe a dozen or so companies that made A-buses,Ais the type of bus,i only know some of this because of my job.& yeah i do get to ride the short bus!
if ya wanna shorten it any-it's easy 'cause the roof is just riveted together & the floor should be plywood..
    POST some pictures......

  18. my mom said everyone rides the short bus?? im confused. nap time

  19. Depends on how fat the droolers and mouth breathers are and how close they are too the school/home.
I am going to guess that Texas Hardcore is pretty damned close to on the money. Figure a mid '50s 1.5 ton or 2 ton truck with a long body instead of a flat bead.

I also work with busses. todays short busses are usually built on a 1-1.5 Ton truck or van chassis. but thats today

Damaged duck is correct they are very modular take out a panel and put the two remaining sides together. wala

  23. The weight is usually in the frame and suspension, if it's on a 1+ ton truck frame with the truck nose on it, you're probably looking at 3 tons minimum. Just as an example, a Chevy 1 ton van weighs 2000 lbs more than a 3/4 ton van - and the difference is all in the suspension and axles. The 3/4 ton is around 4000-4500 lbs depending on motor and options.

This is what I do know,a full size gas engine 70's school bus based on a Ford F-700 chassis weighs around 17,000 pounds empty, but with all the seats and equipment.
50's GM one ton pick up are about 4500 pounds empty.
If you're taking a short bus based on a mid sized truck chassis with 20 inch dual tires in the rear, probably 8-10,000 pound with all the seats.
Now what's your traditional hot rod question :D

I hope this would be the right place to ask this. My son has a friend that is a scrap dealer, calls me when they come across older vehicles, they've just gotten a 57 Chevy 48 passenger bus, the interior was stripped out to become an RV, was never finished. Roughly what does a monster like this weigh. I'll be taking the motor, trans, front sheetmetal, rear axle, and front suspension. They drove this monster 100 miles up here and the old six ran fine from what my son tells me. Now I just need a clean 54 AD to put it in.
