Does anybody know where I can get a new F-1 steering gear? It seems like there are none left out there.

The internals are the same as 37-48 passenger. The cars saw easier service so try to find a good cross steer box and rob it. New parts are also available.

If this is that new finned aluminum box, you may want to do a search here before purchasing. A HAMBer in Europe bought one and had a nightmare of problems with it.

Man, I had forgotten all about John Kovar. Now I had to go back and read that whole mess.

And take a close look at the sector on that box. How do you suppose the pitman arm held in place?

I couldn't figure that one out either, Kevin.

I'll stick with my old pile of Gemmer boxes...

  12. What's it going in? An F-1 or something else? Take a look at the box and column from a '64-' 69 Dodge A-100 van. THey used GM Saginaw boxes set up for side steer. I had a good one out of a '69 A-100 that I junked, gave it to a friend who used it in his '21 Studebaker roadster. He's very pleased with it.

Has the flange on the steering box been modified to fit the 32 frame? If so, you would be better off rebuilding the existing box. I've rebuilt quite a few of them. PM me if you want some help.

Hey Neal, are you aware of any other box that has the Hudson style worm and sector?

I'm basically trying to "reverse" a Chris Craft box so the pitman arm works correctly pointing downward.

I've been hunting for a RHD 37-48 Ford box...as that would give you the correct sector shaft to do what you want. There were some other Gemmer III's out there, as I have a box similar to a 37 Hudson...but it's not. Possibly Mopar?
