Technical What are ya Flathead guys runnin 4 Muffs?

Got a 32 Vicky with a "Warm "
Flattie in it,
Headers into straight pipes, sounds bitchen, but want to tone
it down just a bit for "Long Haul" Cruzin.
Any suggestions?

My 8BA has a pair of original Fentons running into Porter's. Deep low tones at idle and cruising speeds, a bit louder if you put your foot in it. Do a internet search or go directly to YouTube and you can hear a good variety of mufflers. Keep in mind that the sound will still vary with each unique application.

Wanna run quiet? Go to the parts store and buy a set of 2 cheap 4 cylinder muflers that have the correct diameter for your pipes. Try to find something like late 80's Volvo primarys. They are short, oval and will hide easilly. If you still need ocasional noise, mount a set of cut-outs in front of the muflers at the end of the headders, I have a set of old, never used Cal-Customs with arms that open and close a flap you can have for $50 including shipping.

running Brockman Mellotones on my 39 Ford High Perf 59L Flathead - sound just right for me - my 35 ScOT Blown 59A are straight pipes - sounds just right to me!

 

I just got my '50 Ford's 8BA running again after sitting for 38 years. The engine is stock with the exception of Fenton headers running into Brockman Mellowtones with 2" tailpipes. I couldn't be happier with the exhaust note. I crank it up just to hear it idle!

 

Cherry bombs with echo cans on mine.

 

Don, ya remember the Smithy's on my 41? We agreed that they sounded nice but way too quiet. Engine was stock and muffs were 24".

I'd go with Brockman Mellow Tones or Porters, 18" ought to sound just right.

 

cheapo center dump headers, and 18" brockman mellowtone steel packs, very happy with the sound.

 

Straight pipes.....

 

I've got Red's Headers, 24" Smitty's and some long, big megaphones on my otherwise stock mill. I'ts way to quiet although it gets louder every year. I keep thinking of just pulling the mufflers and going with straight pipes. But it ain't broke so I ain't fixin' it.

 

I'll add another vote for Porters; great tone! If you still want that straight pipe roar at WOT but just want to take the edge off when idling around town or cruising on the highway, look into a set of Dynomax race bullet mufflers.

 

I've run Brockman Steel-paks on my cars. I ran 22" on one - too quiet for one - 12" on another - I like that. Takes the edge off the straight pipes if you need it...

 

Stock manifolds into duals with short glasspacks on mine, sounds great! Local guy who does excellent custom exhaust work probably helped, but hey.

 

Smthys sounds great after they get little burned out

Porter will make you any size you want. Also an alliance vendor.
If you have open pipes now and just want to quiet them a little, I would get a set of 12" to take the edge off. I had a standard set on a flathead. They sounded good for a cruiser may be too quiet for a HotRod.
They also sell those Red Hots on ebay for about $15 a pop. Might be worth a try just cause they're so cheap.

Had a pair of Smithy's on mine that were showing some rust out, but sounded great. I mention to a friend of mine that I was thinkin' of replacing 'em and he said he had a pair still new in the boxes, stored in the attic of his garage for years that were for an old build that he sold.
So we pulled 'em out and they were the same as what I had......put 'em on about a month ago. They're not as throaty as the old ones, but time will fix that!

 

Late 60's ran Cherry Bombs on my 39..............

 

Aluminized exhaust tubing. As few bends as possible.

 

Brockman Mellowtone steel packs.

 

284 c.i. 8BA with Fentons. I'm using Flowmaster Hushpower mufflers.

 

I love small blocks but the sound you hear on the video is a 348 stroker through Porter mufflers.
