59AB Flathead Weight

    I'm getting set to build a roll around dolly to move a 59AB Flathead around the shop.
    I'm wondering what the weight of that little doggie is.
    Does anybody happen to know? Stock or otherwise.
    Mine has 3-2's on an aluminum intake with Offy aluminum heads.
    No clutch, flywheel, starter or generator on it.

    500lbs? Got to be over 400 even with the aluminum.

    Thanks for your guess oj.
    My guess was up around 900lb.
    I have a 1000lb. capacity dolly that I was planning on using as a base.
    I'm just not sure that it doesn't weigh 1000lb. +
    Maybe someone else will come forward with the accurate weight.

    Me and a friend can barely lift, move and load a flathead BLOCK ONLY. So, I'd guess just the cast iron block is 175 lbs., or 4 bags of dog food!

    Thanks Mathewrench...that thread was helpful.
    Still it seems that those were mostly guesses.
    One guy said 525lb. but that sounds a little light to me.

    Don't have any reliable Ford figgers for a 59, but can tell you that all flatheads weigh much the same, with variation coming mosltly in heads, bolt-ons, flywheel...
    A 32 V8 ready to run WITH trans and clutch was 625. Just start subtracting from there...that has a boat-anchor grade flywheel and iron heads.
    Probably running engine would be in the low 5's without flywheel and back, with aluminum heads.
    Generally not much different from a SBC with iron heads, though of course you have more weight in the block and less upstairs due to basic design.

    Sounds like the consensus of the guesses are between 500-600lbs.
    without flywheel and clutch.
     
  8. That's relative to who is lifting it. Myself and another strong friend can lift an assembled shortblock off the floor and slid it into a engine stand or move it onto a truck bed....But we're young and dumb. ;):D

    I'd put an assembled short block at around 350-400lbs and a full motor around 600lbs

    Another page on engine sizes and weight lists the flatheads between 525-569 pounds.
    I'm guessing that there are complete assemblies. Couldn't live on the difference.
    I have cheap engine carts, one has a 351C the othr a BBC with a blower. You can roll them around but there heavy. Good luck with your project.

    So does everybody think about 575 for a complete stock engine?

    Me and my brother can pick one up off the floor and move it around by grabbing the exhaust manifolds, I was surprised at how light they are for the time they were made in.

    I'm not sure what the one I had weighed but I rolled it all over the garage on the the bottom part of an old grocery cart that my bud gave me.
     
  14. @ 600LBS SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT. .LAST YEAR GOT THE ''HERNIA PATCHED'' FOR DOING THE DRAG AROUND THE GARAGE TRICK.

    BUT I GUESS LIFTING MODEL A BODIES.
    HOOFING THE BANJO REAR ENDS.
    MOVING THE CHASSIS AROUND DIDNT HELP IT EITHER.

    A Y block weighs 610lbs, and I am told that they weigh just about as much as a flattie.

    OK so I guess the Harbor Fright 1000lb. rated dolly base might do the job.
