Projects HAMB Friendly DD?

I currently drive an 88 Burb 4x4(12mpg and VERY OT). I want to get something more hamb friendly, but it has to get better mileage and be under $4100, fairly reliable and within 1 state of me. I know about 50's-90's GM stuff, but not much about anyone else's or anything pre-50's. Any suggestions? Anyone want to trade? Thanks a bunch, Bradley
