I have a 97 that some hot rodder painter RED, i want it off! Anyone got an evil scheme to make this happen?......other than blasting it!
Oven cleaner eats aluminium..........doesnt it??!! Thanks though. Wouldnt paint stripper eat it also??? Only one way to find out i spose. Thanks for the replies!
There's a liquid paint stripper that works great, use it all the time when I leave paint in mixing tins etc (made of aluminum) If you want me to steal a jar full let me know
You didn't say what kind of paint? Powder coated or regular enamel or epoxy? I've had purple power cleaner remove paint. You might want to try whatever you use on a an old carb body first . Don't think your 97 is aluminum.
Whatever chemical you use will likely eat the seals anyway or o-rings, so why not disassemble it and media blast it? who knows what evil may be inside? This is the time to make sure that all is well inside too. Just a thought.
Nitromethane will make that paint disappear so fast you'll wonder if it was ever there to begin with. Nitro was actually developed as an industrial cleanser.
Ive heard soaking it in pinesol over a couple days will do it.... dont know if theres any truth to that... but it takes the plastic chrome of model kits over night.
Take it from an aircraft mechanic, aluminum's pretty robust stuff. Paint thinner works, MEK is great, Toluene, Carb dip, lacquer thinner, aircraft paint stripper, Naval jelly. It's all good stuff. Count on replacing the seals, but the aluminum shouldn't be much of a concern.
My understanding is that nitro was a byproduct of producing a solvent that was widely used in the printing industry. When that solvent was replaced the cost of nitro increased dramatically. Nitro is corrosive to aluminum, so it wouldn't be a good idea to soak the part for too long.
I once bought a Stromberg that had been painted with that awful gold paint made for carbs, designed to make a carb look like the kindergarten class spray painted it to make a Chistmas tree ornament...thought it would be easy to clean! A month in thinner did absolutely nothing...put it in the carb cleaner NAPA sells in the can with a soaking basket...I think that was about $40.00. That stuff is weak as carb cleaner goes, but it did get the ^%$%%^$# epoxy paint off of the car after a LONG soak. Left the carb cleaner full of paint flakes, too. If the stuff is epoxy carb paint, I suspect that carb cleaner is the only thing that will remove it from the carb rather than removing the carb from it...
That's the best cleaner I've found. It doesn't work as well as what you could buy 20 years ago, but it's head and shoulders above any other carb dip I've tried. Larry T
Wow, first question thread i have started that has had more than 2 people reply! Thanks fella's, I will give the paint stipper a go.
soak it in gas the paint will bubble like you were using aircraft stripper then use an old tooth brush and brush away i stripped two carters that were painted gold this way or use some paint gun cleaner same effect
