I had fun at the races last night, dropped a valve in the blown 454 in my 55 chevy. still ran 12.65 on 2.75 gears, so I don't feel too bad. The engine's been in the car for 10 years, 40k miles, since I last freshened it up. Hopefully I just need to replace one piston and valve, and install those new springs and retainers and keepers I bought last year and never got around to.....oops.

It's gotta be better than watching golf.

This is very cool (the live stream, not the engine damage). Best wishes.

I dont think theres going to be enough room in the garage for all of us. Need more counter space to sit beers on also. Cool just the same. :)

Jim, that's wild. Sucks about the valve. You've helped me so much, I wish I could lend a hand. I'd forget the camera was on and start singing or something stupid.

Sorry to hear about the valve, never a good time to break stuff, but aint technology grand!? The only problem on my end was the constant stream of ads running... But at least I now know which one of my shakras are weak! Must be nice and cool down in your end of the state 'cause your both dressed like humans instead of the 110 degree sweat fest the is my shop at this moment...

Getting close, I'm gonna pull the engine then the trans separately. I need to go thru the transmission also, it's been in there since 2004 and has quite a few miles on it.

Dang cars get dirty when you drive them'

I'm 50, my son Gary is 20, he's helping me today. Got the head off, valve was bent pretty bad, guide is wasted. Head of the valve broke off when I tried prying it out of the head. not much holding it together, if it had come off when it was running, might have ruined the head or block.

I wonder if the piston will be ok? hmmm.....a new one is only $50, probably better safe than sorry

I'm listening to my mp3 player

That sucks, Squirrel. Do Chevys swap crumbs to other cylinders when they come apart? VW's do.

I didn't see anything in the other holes on that side, and haven't pulled the other head off yet.

That's neat. You even know how to make tearing up stuff cool. Does your helper get to drive the 55 once in a while?

Gary hasn't driven it yet, he's gonna have to get to after all this work on it though

Pulled the other head and half of the pistons, there were valve guide bits embedded in most of the pistons. Doesn't look like it hurt anything, the bearings look nice, rings move freely, etc. I guess I'll see if $450 is in the budget for new pistons, or if they'll be ok as is. They will probably be fine.
