Had a question arise about a vin # on a 52 chevy truck. On the link below, it shows a serial # with an outline of a truck, the description "vehicle number" on the link points to the tag that is on the drivers side door jamb. QUESTION IS.....Will the V.I.N. on the paper title for the truck be the same as this # on the door OR will it be different? I've had some trucks that there is no # on the plate and some with just two #'s and registered them just fine. If there is the stock engine in the truck, would it be on the bellhousing somewhere? http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/52057.html Thanks
The title may use the VIN or it may use the engine number, it depdends on what that particular state did at that time, they were not standardized. The engine number was stamped on the block only, nowhere else.
And the tag number is probably only stamped on the tag, it pre-dates frame stamps for Chevrolet by a couple years.
he is 1oo percent correct califorina should use the serial # but say if it were a washington truck orignaly the used engine numbers i belive
Ive had old Chev's from Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado that all used engine numbers as the VIN on the title, so don't take out the original engine if it's still in there until you check the number, and if it matches the title, have it inspected and changed over to the door plate (if your state will do that).
The tag on the door jamb is just basic information on where the truck was built, when it was built, and what number it was off the assembly line. There is no VIN number as newer vehicles have and there is no paint code, interior code, engine code, etc......etc.....
uh....that info about where, when, and what serial number it was off the assembly line IS the VIN. If you don't believe it, look at the link in the original post, Chevrolet documentation states specifically that the number on that tag on the door jamb IS the Vehicle Number. As the years went by, carmakers added more information to the VIN, but it's always been the VIN.
