A beefy but narrow differential, sub 4ft

Long story short, I've got a project on the go and immediately ran into a snag: the diff is small and wimpy, and has got to go in favor of something tougher. The problem is, something tougher can be no wider than 46", and that's drum to drum at the wheel mount. Short of getting one built or buying one from a rod shop, is there any vehicle that would have come with such a beast stock? It will be seeing a set of slicks and a built 327, so it's gotta be tough as well, or at the very least able to be made tough. Thanks!

fork lift? i've heard a old wives tale that some forklifts had 9 in rears in them. i don't have first hand knowledge, just what i've heard

Look for a Taylor-Dunn utility vehicle. They used the Ford 9" rear, with some tiny brakes you can swap out, on very narrow vehicles. Even the electric ones use the 9".

How wide are those early Thunderbird 9" diffs???
They were quite narrow diff's or otherwise an E type Jaguar rearend...

Other trick could be to find a diff that has a compatible short side that may work, then find another the same and get the long side shortend to have it as two short sides together.
I did the opposite when I needed to widen a diff with two long sides.

Find one that has an offset center (one long axle and one short axle) remove material on the long side of the axle tube, weld back together. And use a short axle in what used to be the long side. (2 sort axles). It will work for 8 ¾ and 9 inch.

CJ type Jeep rear axle is around 50 inches wide between wheel mounting surfaces.They used a Dana 44 from the early 50's into the 70's.The 70's axles have stronger axles and I think by then they dropped the tapered axle ends with the big nut.Dana 44 is a 8-1/2 ring gear and pretty rugged unit with lots of available gear ratios.Drag racing with slicks? For a street hot rod yes,for a dedicated drag car? probably not.

What he said.....................We have the 3 wheeler electric ones at work, and they have 9 inch diffs in them, and may be NARROWER, than you wish............

I'm in San Diego at a Navy place at a robot competition...drove my 55 chevy over here. Fun! Saw a TD cart, looked under the back, what do you know. 9" ford.

i had a chevy 250 straigt 6 in my 72 datsun PU. 4.11 or 4.22 gears.48" outside dim. took a lot of shit. glide/38' MUDDERS. 34' driveshaft. 6 lug chevy bolt circle.

I measured an older postal Jeep, today, and it's ~50" wms-to-wms. I believe people said they have Dana 44 rear ends.

I had a late-70's Jeep Wagoneer Dana 44 rear end that had about a foot offset. It was ~61" wide, so according to my calculations it'd make a ~36" rear end ...
