Folks Of Interest Ed Iskenderian turns 90 July 10th....!

    Happy Birthday Ed. I remember walking into his shop with my dad as a 14 year old kid looking for someone to grind me a custom Studebaker cam. He knew my dad from his auto parts store so that might be why he gave me the time of day. He listened to my explanation of why I wanted the cam ground my way. He told me it just might work and ground the cam. Two years later I set the track gasser record at Lions with that cam.

    Fast forward to May of this year. I am working the Gas Up event at the Mendenhall Mseum as a new member of the Gold Coast Roadsters club. He shows up. We talk about the old days. He humors me and says he sort of remembers me and the cam. He did remember the 505 and 550 rollers he ground for my Mopars. Then he does something really cool. We go out in the street to see my latest ride. He loves the fact that it is Stude powered. I ask him if he would sign my hood for me. He signs my hood. Awesome day for me. Thank You Ed for being one of my lifelong Heroes!

    One of the first Hot Rod Mags I bought as a kid showed Ed's roadster, and said they dragged it from out back in the shop, got it running after pulling the plugs and pumping some water out of it, and Ed drove it around the block, grinning from ear to ear with his characteristic cigar firmly clamped in place. It may have been the Hot Rod 25 year commemorative issue.

    I may have filled in the blanks a bit, but it was one of the things that has stuck with me and got me interested in the early style rods.
