The earlier spindle are just fine as spindles but almost nothing except the hydraulic brake adaptor kits to mount 39-48 brakes on them is available. The stub axle of the early spindles is longer than the 37-41 or 42-48 spindles and the backingplate flanges are smaller and use smaller fasteners.
Since you said you are going to run disc brakes, you will find that you will probably have fabricate your own caliper brackets and figure out the bearing adapters. The common kits are made for '37-'48 spindles which have a different bolt pattern and register circle.
