Earlier this year we had a discussion about 327 sbc versus 350. See this thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=565102 Back then I bought the 350 at a good price because the guy was not sure about selling the 327 and I needed a sbc for measurements but I was still looking around to find a 327... So today he finally made his decision and I brought the 1962 corvette engine home and I found a F1 steering box with my dad at the scrap yard! What a cool day!
I had a 350 hp 327 in my 65 corvette back in 1970. It was the hydraulic lifter version. The solid lifter version was rated at 375 hp. I think you have made the right choice as the 327 was a very good engine in it's day. JMO.
"it's day" would be the years before Chevrolet brought out something bigger! I have one in my Chevy II right now...
327's rock, I bought my first one with tip money from being a car hop. I was already a married guy with a child, but had to do car hop duty at a drive inn I worked at during the noon hour, my hot rod buddies teased me about it untill I had the smokin 327 in my 57 blowin their doors off. Ah, the good ol days. ~sololobo~
just remember that all 62 Corvette motors were not created equal. My 62 came with the base engine 250 HP version 327. Same engine as an Impala. Get the code off of the pass deck to find out exactly what you have. Whomever has my old 62 will be disappointed to find out that it was replaced with a 350. Shame on me.
Well today is as good a day as any I suppose. I have owned a few that I liked real well. I'd probably own a few more if they were available and I had the cash in hand.
Here you go newbhotrod !! Any day a Hot-Rodder can look back at good memories made by this hobbie "IT'S A GOOD DAY" >>>>.
By the number mine is the 300HP version of 1962 with SD suffix code. But chopt top kid is right, only if you have the valve cover to prove it!
62 Corv. 327's had larger casting numbers and would be 2870 akso believe they were Flint castings. Good choice, couple it up with the double humps and the finned scripted valve covers and nestle it down in any early Cheby and it is a perfect match. The L-79 hyd. cam will wake it up and be street friendly too.
Good for you...the 327 is/was/always will be a great little engine. Simple to work on, parts not real expensive and easy to find, and very dependable. Also old school...... Good luck and glad you got what you were wanting !! Cheers...
