I'm collecting parts for my '40 Ford project... I'm in the market for a rear-end, the car is getting a built flatty and a 5-speed, and has a stock '40 ford front end. Anyway, before I purchase a banjo rear-end, I would like to use the '46-'48 truck banjo because of it's open driveline, if I have to, I can use a '40 banjo and convert it to open... Here is my question... What do I need to make the wide 5's work for my application and will the hubs even fit the truck rear-end? Are there certain wide 5 hubs I should stay away from? Are there any reproduction hubs that can be purchased new? Are the wide 5 wheels themselves the same bolt patern from 36-39? Thanks.
If you have a stock 5 on 5 1/2" 40 front end, why not just use the 46-48 5 on 5 1/2" rear hubs as well. If you want to use the 36-9 wheels because you like them, then, I believe any of the 36-9 rear hubs will work on any of the 40-48 banjos open or not. The wheels are all the same bolt pattern 36-9
Thank you... I have the 5 on 5 1/2" on the front right now... But I'm refering to wide five as in the 10" bolt pattern... I heard that in order to run the wide 5 hubs, some modifications have to be made to the backing plates on the front...
39 only for juice brakes/car and truck (1/2 ton ) are the same/not sure if early drums will work...backing plates are different...but Ford didn't change things a lot...so usually things would interchange for a number of years...
Drums and hubs will interchange 37 - 48 (37 - 39 are wide-five). Backing plates will work 39 - 48, but its easiest if you stick with 39 - 41 rear backing plates to match the fronts.
Rear drums and hubs '36-'39 will work, '37-'39 for the front. '36 fronts will NOT work. '40-'41 backing plates are the same as '39, the '39 hydraulic brakes used the same drums as '37-'38 mechanical brakes. Passenger car and 1/2 ton pickup/panel (112" wheelbase) are the same, as are '39 Mercury.
Thank you guys so much, tons of help... I just want to know what to look for so I'm not buying more parts than what I need only to find out I bought the wrong hubs and drums... 38fordpickup - You're saying the rear drums and hubs will interchange between the passenger cars and pick ups... right?
Yes, the cars and 1/2 ton pickups rear hubs/drums will interchange from 36-48 Also, the car and 1/2 ton pickup front hubs will interchange from 37-48.
I'm pretty sure speedway motors has a adaptor kit. Bolts onto your stock 5 on 5 1/2" hubs and goes out to the wide five wheels.
Drums are not reproduced, yet, so less than .060 oversize 12" are hard to find & NOS are golden. I guess because so many of us like um.
Yes Speedway make one, may be wide 5 to 4.5 though. I have a set off my 37 too. May widen the rears and put them back on.
