Fantastic work. You make me feel guilty for buying pre-madee floorpans for my Riviera. I shoulda made 'em! The best part of your thread is the bead tool... what a great idea. That's why I love this site. Keep the updates coming. I've subscribed to see what is next. Later, Mike
Rusty Addiction? Hmmmm...who can this be!?!? LOL Your avatar is perfect BTW! Made up the hump extension and welded that in. It was a bit complicated because of a reverse bend it needed but worked out OK in the end. Almost ready to finally weld in the donor floor sections. Had to get some stuff blasted and then repaired, like the seat support brackets. The donor floor pan had several rustouts per side so I needed to clean everything up with a knotted cup brush on the mini-grinder and then make and weld in the patches. I welded most from the inside and will leave a good portion of the weld bead intact. The outside area I just had to grind back the penetration a bit to make it look good enough. Had my rockers made at a local sheetmetal shop and I'm not really happy as they put a crease where one shouldn't be. Not really sure what to do...might just use the lower flange area to repair the ones on the car and add a patch or two where rust goes high up the side at the rear. It'll mean more filling but with something this rough it won't really matter too much. Yes...I could bring the rockers back...but I blame myself as much as the shop because I didn't communicate clearly to them that it was for an old car I was doing and not just a rusty modern junker. They would be fine for a rusty driver...and this shop has always treated me with fast service for a good price AND good work. The fault is as much mine as theirs...so I'll just deal with it myself. Tomorrow night I'll have the drivers side welded in and then I'll start on the pass side. After that it looks like I'll finally be able to get at something outside the car for a change...
Oh Jason....thats SO wrong to say that! Hahahaha You better not turn your back on him tomorrow!!!! Drivers floor is finished now, mounted in position and ready to spot weld in place for good.
Drivers floor is finished now, mounted in position and ready to spot weld in place for good.
lets see the pics!!
lets see the pics!!
Didn't take any of it screwed in place. Will some pics of it fully welded into the car do???
Bill you make me sick. you putting in floors and I`m just getting them cut out. Looks good.So I take it after the other side is done your going to mount the body on a rotisserie and fill the floors and prime and sand and then 32 coats of lacquer and water sand and buff???? No!!!
Yup...clear sealer and clear black paint and clear undercoating! It does look good but I didn't do anything special...just give it a good cleanup and prime. Having those donor sections from monty really made a difference in how it looks. I'm busy tomorrow night but plan to have the other side in and the priming and sealing done by Sunday sometime. I CAN'T wait to get away from the floors and start doing some outer body repairs because I'm burnt out on this stuff. The firewall/cowl is gonna have to wait till the quarters and rockers are done. I GOTTA have a change of scenery to keep me insane...
Thats PERFECT Pete! Man...thats actually gonna fit now! I had to take a slowdown on the car for a bit. Kinda pissed off as a NONHAMB friend was SUPPOSED to be helping me with the mechanical bits and he just keeps putting me off. I'm surprised he's being like that...but he's been paid in trade already so I guess it shows his character. Worked on it here and there but took it easy...started up with purpose again last night and an hour in I ran outta wire! Just great. The last floor is all repaired and about half welded in. THIS weekend I need to see some headway again. I'm in the mood even more now that I see what you did with that screwy rocker Peter. Great job, and I thank you!!!
Awesome stuff! I love your car btw. I drive a '63 Dart, those early 60s Mopars are rad. Loving the progress on your 330, its looking great! Thanks for sharin' the pics with us. -Allan
Always keep a spare 2lb roll of wire around....cause you never run out when you are just about done for the day!
Thats exactly what i usually do Steve...but back then I bought a full 11lb roll as I figured I'd be using it up fast enough that it wouldn't get rusty on me. NEVER run out now I thought! Yeah...right. LOL Just bought a 12.5lb roll of Canadian made Lincoln wire. The last roll was off-shore from PA so I'll be able to see if one is better than the other.
Bill I was using the high end wire and now using the PA wire.don`t notice any different. I`m glad you got peter to fix up that rocker. would be sad to have to chop up a rocker to make it work. Nice job Peter. Where did you find the room to do that job. you garage is so spacious!! I was there a few weeks ago and had to go outside to change my mind!!lol
fitzee the crew cab 8 foot box truck (AKA little family truck) has been outside for a month now (not being worked on). That free's up a little bit of space lol.
Floor is done except for two seat belt reinforcements, a bit of cleanup grinding and paint. Pete wheeled the other rocker for me so I'm ready to go with those next. Off to "Debris Automotive" to get some wheels and a set of disc brake spindles tomorrow and who knows what else!
Nice Bill! The workmanship is almost too nice for what the car is I still think it should be displayed with mirrors under it lol!
Wow...been a while since my last post! Got the rockers on and man, did they try to kick my ass. The Metal shop bends were off a little, my inner rockers were off a little and on top of that I really should have had them made from 18g at least as the slight roll and the inward positioning made them act like flat sheet and difficult to put on evenly. Due to the mismatch of the bends I had to remove the flange and make new ones that I welded to to the body pinchweld first...then position the rockerpanel and massage it into place with clamps, screws and a bottle jack. Total PITA...but they're on. Fitzee, Rustydebris (Jason) and myself went out to an old car dump site and picked up a set of wheels and some other odds and ends. Jason found an old CO2 extinguisher and passed it on to me. My intention is to modify it to take water and a schrader valve and use it around the garage in case something seems to be smouldering as I weld...like my jacket was last weekend! The extinguisher was complete down to the locking pin hanging from a chain, but the cone is history. I cleaned the cylinder up a little and it appears to have been yellow originally and is dated 5-44! I assume thats May, 1944 AND the brass ring that goes around it to hold the dispersion cone is marked as United States NAVY. No...you can't have it back! LoL Best guess is that it was surplus from one of the several US Navy bases that were here on the island during and after the war. Anyway...a nice conversation piece if I ever get my garage back in order!!!! The brake setup I got was a real workout to remove and I have to give big thanks to Fitz and Jason for finding it originally and then going back to help me find/remove it. The 78 Charger was there a long time. My guess is it was a stolen car at some point and was driven nose down into a stand of trees and just left to rot. It rotted really well. It's the newest car in the area as most others are late 50's and 60's. We had to cut down small trees with a hacksaw just to gain access!!! Pictures tell the tale of just what a chore it was. 12" disc assemblies complete...although the rotors and calipers etc need to be replaced with new. It's all on order from a local shop...just gotta clean up the knuckles and caliper mounts. The heater and most of the original front suspension is out of my car now. The cowl appears to be in good shape inside which really surprised me. No sign of leaks on the drivers side. Started on cleaning up the quarters for repair. Gonna be a big patch! LoL Anyway...thats where I'm at now!
Nice job on the rockers. The rivet work is something.I didn`t think there was any patches put back there. I new there was filler and fiberglass but never seen any of that. Them quarters are going to be a fun project.
Yeah...whoever did it hid the mess with a good glob job of brushable undercoating (Roofing patch/tar!) on the inside. Not a big deal...just a bit bigger than i thought. I knew the bottom 6" had to be done...16" was a bit of a surprise! LOL The whole quarter panel is almost completely flat lengthwise so that makes it easier. I was planning to do the wheel lips like you do them but I'm so far down on time now that I think I'll just shortcut and do it with a steel rod lip like John F's Drag car...NOT a big "Gasser" style opening, maybe a bit higher/longer, but keeping close to the factory side profile of course. Gonna have to pick up a half sheet of 18 or 20g I guess!
I see you stopped on Salmonier Line on the way back from ( I'm guessing ) Colinet. BTW, nice work on the Plymouth.
Yes you might know something about the history of these cars? the white chevy was interesting, you know anything??
