  2. Stick welding is still used to this day at Nuclear Powerplants, we have all just become too acustomed to the new, fast, and easy methods for welding. If you get a cheap AC/DC stick machine, now you almost have it all about covered.

  3. No worries, the rear wheel is chocked.

Biggest factor in making it work, probably is the duty cycle. Having the welder cranked up high enough to weld it, you'll have to do the work in small increments, to keep the welder from going over it's duty cycle. But the machine will work in the hands of a skilled welder.

you can get a 220 stick welder at your local swap meet for less then a case of beer im sure. make yourself up a chord for the dryer plug if you dont have a 220 line in the garage. then you dont even have to worry about it.

Welding is kind of like golf. The best golf clubs still won't make you good a golfer. A great welding machine ain't going to make you a welder either but if you practice practice practice you will get better. A good welder can lay that bead for them brackets with a 110v welder with no problem and it be completely safe. The question is do you have the skill to do it ? If not get someone that does.

Just FYI, Afco ( and Others) makes a split leaf spring pad that clamps around the tube, allowing you to move the rearend side to side, in or out, set the pinion angle etc....and then you weld it all the way around, giving you more surface area than the saddle mounts most people use. If you get a good weld, the problem is not the weld, but the tube itself, it will rip out around the weld. The 360 deg mount makes this less likely.
Please listen to the guys that say take it to a pro. Good Luck with your project.

Nice. It's ridiculous that you had to define ludicrous.

"can" and "will" seem to be used interchangeably in these welding threads...

Personally, I've had welds I've done fail by using a 110 Lincoln MIG on 1/4" . Chances are they would have held under normal circumstances, but some vicious(and consistent) wheel hop cracked them. The welds may look fine, but you just don't get the same push into the steel as with a bigger machine. Even with multiple passes, the dig isn't the same. If you go that route, fcaw digs deeper, as has been pointed out.

Not saying you can't do it, because you can. Just something to consider.
