Nitro for Stromberg 97's

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kerry, Apr 2, 2011.

  1. I was going some old goodies I had picked up when I came upon this.
    I'd completely forgotten about it.

I bought it from an older gentleman who used to run a speed shop out
of the basement of his appliance shop. He still has some car parts
but nearly all the speed parts are gone. Mixed with it all is a wall
of old drag racing trophies. He used to be a Chassis Research dealer
and has a rear engine Chassis research car. Or I should say his
    grandson has one now. :)

While looking around I found a stack of eight of these boxes. He was
kind enough to sell me one for cheap but I'd like to go back and buy
the rest. I love the Eelco label.

Very Cool Kerry, may have to try it on the TWIN ;)>

  3. Yeah - that is how they did it . . . drilled the crap out of the main dump tubes and went to town! I'm curious as to what the main inlet valve looks like compared to stock - as they need a LOT more fuel volume than the stock needle and seat will take. I know that some guys put a completely different inlet valve into the TOP of the float chamber . . . crazy bastards they were!

I think that at the end of the Stromberg Nitro era, the trick was to overpower the needle and seat with fuel pressure and have it flood over via the vent tube.

  5. The needle and seat are huge but I don't want to take it out of the bag to take a pic. The end is not threaded for a fitting. It is meant to be soldered to a large piece of copper tube.

    Cool stuff:)!
Just curious, what kind of fuel pump did they use with this kind of setup?
    Electric, Hilborn mech., aircraft style???

A really cool setup of 4 modified Stromberg's on a Baron-Tattersfield 4 port on a souped up Flathead, then hit it on Eagle Field...

How cool is that! Last time I visited Winfield's, he showed me a four carb (all stromberg 48's) set up for nitro. It was for the flattie in "The Thing".
