    This one time, at the Drive in...

    We were watching the original Star Trek Movie and Silent Running. The girl I brought ducks out for a drink and meets an old flame and I guess she decided he was better company so she ends up jumping into his van with a couple of other "buddies" and a bag full of weed. I decide to get a drink for myself and low and behold, I run into a "friend with benefits" who just happened to be the third wheel that evening. She readily accepts an invitation to come spend the evening with me and her friends were happy to get some privacy.

    We left after the first movie for a warmer and more comfortable location. I get a call the next day from the first girl, who, after smoking up all evening was left behind by the guy with the van. She thought nothing of it as she expected I would still be there to give her a ride home. Surprise... Apparently she had to call her parents at 2:30am to come get her and that was after walking a long way to find a pay phone.

    Some of the old driveins are still there - just have to view them from the sky like crop circles...

    My first time at a drive in with my own car was quite a night.

    It was a 55 Ford Custom with a souped up 312 and three on the floor.
    I had lowered it so much than when I crossed the hump to find the perfect parking spot I scraped both mufflers off (used the cheap muffler clamps).

    My date and I had a great time until the ride home. Pulled over twice and ticketed both times for loud exhaust. The worst of all I woke up her parents in the wee hours of the morning when I dropped her off. She was forbidden to see me again (bad influence and all that), but we still went out.

    Forty years later she still puts up with me and my hot rods (what a great wife).

    I remember seeing "Grease" at the 'Circle Drive In' in Long Beach with my parents in our Econoline camper when it first came out.
    Me and my girl in the 80's would go to the Los Altos Drive (LBC) in her 68 Nova SS...Huge back seat :D
    Fast forward almost 30 years and there is no mo drive in :mad:

    One saturday night in the early 70s we tried to sneak into the drive in, we were all 16 or 17 with five of us in a friends 55 Chevy. We were going in the exit gate that had those spikes that would flip down leaving but cut your tires entering, we got the front thru by holding them down by stepping on them and guiding the car thru, the back tires were much wider and a car was coming out and the driver got in a hurry, cut the sidewall out of two rear tires that were almost new. We saved 5.00 and bought beer with that money but it cost him over 100.00 for new tires...

    I remember going to the drive-in on one of those warm Milwaukee summer nights. My sister had three young nubile teen friends who wanted to go to the movie. I think it was Dawn of the Living Dead. They were on the roof of my old 69 Buick Special laying together. Every time the zombies would grab someone I would reach up and grab the girl's leg and make a scary zombie noise doing it. The screams were loud and it almost got us kicked out.

    We just picked up the complete 1964 records for a drive in that was located in North Carolina. Really interesting to see how much they brought in each day from the gate and also how much from the snack bar. It also lists each movie they showed that year - looks like they had switched over to more "adult" fare that year.

    Construction on the Admiral Twin is expected to start in a few weeks with a re-opening in July. Design was approved and they're just waiting on the steel for the new screens.

  15. A few stories from 1971-1973.

    Went to the drive-in in my '66 GTO with my new girlfriend. About 20 minutes into the show, went to the snack bar. Parked 2 cars over was the girl's Mom and Dad.

    Same girl a couple weeks later in same GTO. Couldn't wait to get in the back seat so we knocked it out in the front seat. The next day she had bruises on her back from the console. Her Mom figured it out right away and suggested Planned Parenthood to us but she didn't tell 'Dad'

    Been to see Dirty Harry 7 times and still don't know the story line.

    Just put a set of Blue Streak Indy tires (not street legal) on my 70 Chevelle SS. Went to the trashy $3 a carload drive-in on a double date. Got ready to leave and had 2 flat tires. Lucky my house was only a mile away, but rolling 2 spare tires for a mile isn't easy.

    At a drive-in in San Jose watching the movie. Something catches my attention out the corner of my eye. I turn to have a better look and see a rat the size of a Basset Hound. Really get to looking around and there's huge rats all over the place.

    About 25 (gee, maybe it's 30) years ago, there was a Drive-In theater in the little town of Hastings MI, which was widely known as "Dirty Flloyds", as they showed pornos. It was a landmark (or SOME kind of mark...) in the area.

    At the time, we had a '59 Ford Skyliner Retractable, and one summer Saturday night, my wife and drove it up to Dirty Flloyds for the movie.

    About halfway thru the show, it got a little chilly, so I put the top up. When the trunk lid, hinged at the rear, was up and the top was going up, it got into the projecter beam, and the resulting shadow blocked about half the screen! Looked pretty cool, the shadow of the top and trunk lid in the movie. Lot's of horns honking and cheering, despite the "coitus interruptus".

    As I recall, the movie was "The Devil in Miss Jones", and "Behind the Green Door". We also saw "Flesh Gordon", and "The Cheerleaders", the XXX versions there.

    Ahhh, those were the days, my friend...

    There were two drive-in movies right next to the old Oakland Stadium. My Dad would take my Mom, my sister and I to the drive- in, leave us there and jump the fence and go to the races. If I raised enough hell, every once in a while I got to go also. Great story huh and very true.

    Our last night in the States, early September 2010, took the '70 Fleetwood down the San Jose drive ins.... took a bottle of Woodford Reserve with us and had a pretty good night... Not sure how old these drive in's are, but they're running 6 screens from memory, and they look like they've been there a while :)

    1. Blew the clutch just outside the ticket box and had to get towed in; :rolleyes:
    2. Then there's the story about an old friend who was the projectionist who went around after the movie and checked on everything before he locked up and went home. Someone forgot to tell the occupants of a panel truck that the movie had finished and everyone else had gone home. He had a front row seat whilst they finished their business so he could go home himself;
    3. Don't know how many midnight to dawns we went to and took a flatbed with deck chairs, eskies etc;
    4. Can't remember how many people we stuffed in the trunk;and
    5. Too old to remember everything that we did and what we got up to.

    I can remember going to the drive-in all the time back in the late 60s. My mom would pop us popcorn and bring a cooler with drinks and we'd put on our PJs. We would watch the cartoons and maybe 1/2 an hour of the 1st movie before falling asleep. A few yrs. back I went to the Alter Boys show with my brother at the Mendon drive in. It was a great show with a good turn out, but we left before the movie started...no radio in the coupe!!!
