It's 62 1/2" outer drum to drum, the perches are 3" wide and the housing diameter is 2 3/4"

On the center section it has the number 78 and the letters DIF and some other markings that I can't make out

    thanks!

Looks like it may be '70 Torino.

Probably an F100 with the leaf spring pads. I had to cut a bunch of sheet metal off of the Torino rear that I used to clean it up. Check the wheel bolt pattern. 5.5 = truck 4.5 = car.

  7. I'm with Tommy on this one.

measure the diameter of the brakes also. 11.5" is either station wagon or truck as a rule.

just measured the drums - they appear to be 11" - 11.5" - I wasn't able to pull a drum tonight due to some lug nuts that are rusted on.

Definitely not a truck, the spring pads are on the bottom of the axle tubes.

I shortened one just like that many years ago for a pro street car and it had the big drums.

    70 Torino for sure.

Yep, all Ford truck 9"s were spring over, cars spring under.

Galaxies where leaf sprung to '64, Torinos to '71.

good point - forgot to mention that.

so obviously I'll be cleaning it up, replacing lines, drums, shoes, springs etc... Should I pull the 3rd member (only reason I can think of is to figure out what gears it has)?

having some problems in finding brakes for this axle. I pulled a drum - it measures 11.5" - also pulled the shoes off and found a part number. It's a bendix shoe with 323428 stamped in it - did a google search and didn't find anything.

Any ideas/suggestions for getting the correct replacement parts?

I would pull the 3rd member. The gears may have rusted from sitting.

I would pull the 3rd member and take it apart and inspect everything. THere's usually something that needs to be fixed. You need to change the seals and O ring too.

If you look up the brake parts for various cars on rockauto.com you should be able to figure it out, going by the size of the shoes.

The housing is the "lightweight" version used on the earlier cars, not sure when they went to the heavy one, I think it was in the early-mid 70s? might have been sooner.

Also read this page. It'll take you a while.

IF you can only loosen the lowermost 3rd member nut with a wrench, and NOT a socket, then it's a 9". IF you can get a socket on it, it's an 8". Unfortunately, you don't include a pic that shows that area. I'm leaning towards 8" however. Butch/56sedandelivery.

It's a 9", I can tell by the shape of the center section. The 8" has straight sides, the 9" is more oval shaped.
