I drive my junk just about everywhere I go. Listening to the low vacuum idle makes sitting in traffic much more tolerable. Another plus side is that people have a tendency to give me the right of way for fear that i might crash into them.

Plym 46, You show your location as central NY. Is that central New York city or central New York state? I'm guessing state as I don't think you'd be on a country road in 10 minutes if you lived in Manhattan. But then maybe you would. Most of the states back there wouldn't make a decent county. Which is why I reckon you can be in the country in 10 minutes. I don't know how people live back there from December to May buried up to your asses in snow and freezing cold. I'll take here over where you are any day. And the dry lake racing is way better here.

  3. I'd rather deal with traffic or slow speeds once in a while & still be able to drive OR ride nearly any day of the year than drive or ride 7 months out of the year because of snow.

Personally, there's a region from about where 5 and 405 split and out on 101 from about Calabasas, down to around Irvine, and east to about I-15, in which I drive only under extreme duress (these days that usually means taking the daughter to the Mouse.)

Sure, there's places and there's times that traffic moves and there's spots particularly to the southeast that are pretty good. But mostly the whole thing just sucks. Gotta bomb through there at 3AM to get anywhere.

Both 5 and 15 down to San Diego can be awful at times, too, maybe not so bad once you're off the freeway, particularly inland of Pendleton.

We've got traffic up here and certain roads are bad at certain times but very rarely ever the grinding-at-30mph-for-forty-continuous-miles-in-every-direction nonsense you get in the LA area. Though I have to admit that it's enjoyable sometimes watching the carpool lanes back up worse than the rest of traffic; God I hate HOV lanes.

Dry lakes, we race on frozen lakes.......I very seldom travel south of West Point.

As a friend who lived in Fla once said when it's cold, you can always put on more clothes, when its hot, there's only so much you can take off. And it's still hot.............

Each to his own specially if we don't know any different. Lived here just about all my life except for 2 years in Brooklyn, and 2 years in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania,

Rather put up with a pile of snow than earthquakes, mudslides, wild fires, and temps of 90 above for three months a year. so for most folks its still three months where being outside is uncomfortable.

I did mention that I was only there for a week so I did not have a full over all impression. I am sure there are places that are incredibly nice both to live and drive, but we missed them.

Guess it all part of why we live in the US. So many choices of what, when , where, and who to be in your life.

This is a good point...If we didnt live in our big city areas closer to the beach and instead lived more inland or central, getting to "country" roads would be 10 mins too!

it's nuts sometimes. timing IS everything... and you gotta know the area. there are lots of nice roads around... but I much prefer northern arizona for a regular life. where I am now is just 6 hours from LA and there are a bunch of enjoyable roads to get there. I moved from LA in '74. my moms still in ventura... and I do visit often. (country roads are just 5 minutes away at moms...)

  8. Every chance I get I drive one of my units. To the grocery store, To Home Depot, To the bank ETC. They are made to drive!!
I drive my roadster to the LA Roadster show. I drive my Fairlane to pamona for the swap. I drive my Falcon to get firewood and parts even though I have a 94 F250.
    Mostly because its FUN!!!!

The jist of the thread seems to be that there too much traffic and it takes too long to get to a driving place in So Cal. A nice drive on a weekend is good, but getting to the area is a bitch. This is why my roadster is for sale, too much traffic and driving defensivly takes the fun out for me. I am so afraid that someone will change lanes or rear end me that I don't want to do it anymore.

I'll stick to the race cars,

From L.A. don't go south, go north. Go up the coast into Ventura, Santa Barbara and further. Oops did I say all that, please disregard, we don't want the traffic.

Driving around SoCal sucks! Even if traffic is moving they'll run right up your ass and then cut you off. I usually end up selling my cars and buying new projects just so I have nothing to drive. I still enjoy the build.

If you really think la/oc traffic is bad, try driving through Dallas

I was going to say the same thing. I moved to L.A. from DFW and I'll take the traffic out here over DFW traffic anyday. I drive my 52 daily and there are plenty of great places to drive. The only thing that sucks is alot of the roads are shitty. I'm used to smooth TX roads

  15. I've driven in the greater LA area and also San Diego and La Jolla for work and special trips. Obviously rush hour on the 405 is not ideal cruising time but like most of us I bet we all would rather driving something "interesting" most of the time because it adds to the experience.

Cruising around Redond would be cool though I'm guessing it would be bumper to bumper on the weekends like the time I went there. There is that road that hugs the coast there that would be cool.

I'll be in San Diego again for work this coming week and I've yet to see any hot rods there.

I've driven to Ventura, that was cool... Also to a wedding held at UC Santa Barbara... nice long drive.

I have to be honest, the poser in me would love to drive my Merc in Holllywood for the night, lots of foot traffic and the attention would be cool.

hey bro, you have to do a highway 1 tour. you will love it!!! bring a little betty with you, you'll have a blast on the best highway in this state! many stops so don't have any plans to make it anywhere, but the turnout on the roads to take pictures! when i get the shoebox running, we should do a road trip!!! almost road ready.

Yeah, me too. I agree about the LA roads/streets being kinda rough some of them haven't been paved since they were built.. I moved to Orange county from LA and the roads here are AWESOME! plus there's never any ice on them.

  18. I disagree! If you drive a car that is modified, loud,or missing ANYTHING.....stay away from Hollywood at night! The cops love to hassle guys with lowered cars, loud cars, attention getting cars,etc..I did the Hollywood cruise one time...and won't go back in my Merc,EVER! The cop messed with me for almost an hour! NO wipers,NO license plate light,TOO LOW,TOO loud,NO directional signals,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH!!!! His partner finally said "let him go...he's on his way home!". I was right across from Graumans Chinese theatre...100's of people. The only thing they didn't do was search my Merc.
It's different during the day, though. Lots to see, great drive, plenty of cool places to eat.

Always something or someone to see in So-Cal. I can drive my cars year round and go to a show or cruise almost every weekend. We have mountains, deserts and like big creep said, Highway 1 is as beautiful as it gets. Nowhere else I'd rather be.

We drive in hollywood all the time. The traffic's fine if you avoid the strip and if you do go down that stretch it's pretty safe 'cause you'll never go more than 2 miles an hour anyway.

Dude that sucks, It sounds like the cops were using you as a distraction so they could take a break from methheads, homeless and nutjobs panhandling. trying to show the tourists what the LAPD is all about.....Theere's way more important stuff they can do in that neighborhood than harrass some guy driving a cool car...maybe his girlfriend left him for a guy with a merc

  22. Without a doubt, my favorite drive is the PCH, US-1 all the way to Oregon!

driving in LA county you are in the most populated county in the US. and at rush time probably moving along with the more cars than anywhere else in the US. So all thing considered yep its a hassle. I really don,t have a problem with it but then I learned how to drive in LA, and that was more than 50 yrs ago.

My average speed on the side streets on my way to work daily at 1230pm is about 40-50 that my speed not everyone else's and then when I hit the 405 north at about 1245pm I'm doing easily 70-80 the 5 mins I'm on the freeway and then when I get off I'm doing 70-80 again on the 405 south at 1035pm and then when I get off at 1040pm side streets I'm doing 50-60. I know I'm not following the speed limits but that's how it goes for me daily!
