Ok....background story....I've been eyeballin a car under a tarp near my place for about a year now..I know it was early-mid 40's...then with every wind storm the tarp would peel back a little more. Finally half the car is in the open...'40 ford coupe...bingo! So I stop by today to see if the owner is interested in selling it...He let me check it out..says it ran about 4 years ago when he parked it there. It's in pretty good shape, interior is a lil dusty and has some mouse turds...but definately useable as is. Owner says it has 42k original miles. He said he'd sell it for the right price. I asked him what is the right price to you? He says 30 grand! This car is by no mean perfect...but would make a cool as-is cruiser. Had a few dents, pitted chrome, needs tires, wiring, and runningboard rubber. Didn't see any rust. I about fainted when he told me 30k. He asked me what I wanted to pay for it I told him 10k. On my way home I got to thinking....am I crazy or is he? I know 10k is cheap....but he told me he thought he'd sell it in no time priced at 30k. Am I missing something?
Asking is one thing, getting it is another. I dont think your far off with the 10 grand, For 30 G's I would want to drive it away and not tow it. Just me talking.
Ok that's what I was thinking....I figured he was dreamin'. I didn't wanna piss him off, I just gave him my card and told him that the offer will stand and to give me a call if he wants a quick sale. I just did a search for some other '40s in the classifieds.......ya you guys are right...he's dreamin'
40 coupes are worth nowhere near the money 32-24 coupes are. $30k for a 42k mile car that looks like it just rolled off a car lot in 1950 might be fine, but not for one that needs restoration. I think your offer of $10k is about right on the mark for a solid car that needs restoration. $15k at the tops for it, and that's if it runs. As they always say.........pictures are worth a thousand words though!
Lot of guys love the '40 Ford.... But yeah, I think you're offer is right there. He's talking crazy money and hoping someone that's got a lot of extra change and no knowledge of old cars will show up.
That's what I figured...he couldn't even speak english...good thing I can speak spanish!!! The crazy thing is, he told me he paid more than 10k 15 years ago for it!!!!
That was before it sat rotting under a wet tarp for 15 years! See if he has a pic of what it looked like when he got it, even if you don't buy it!
If you can pour some gas in the tank, put a battery in it, start it up and drive it away.......................$12,000 to $15,000 tops...............and that's if it's got no rust and a basic cleanup will put it safely on the road. If he gets any more than that the guy should buy a lottery ticket.....he's bound to win. Frank
I had a 40 coupe that didn't run and had been sitting since 1963, everything was there but some of the electrical had been chewed up and needed brakes, headliner had some holes, etc. Car was pretty much rust free and I had no problem getting $21,500 out of it last summer. Sounds like you were both dreaming on the price. Car should be worth between 18-20k.
I was thinking the same thing....He said he's moving to Dallas in the next couple months and said he needed to sell everything....so maybe later after asking 30k for a while he'll let me have it...a guy can dream right?....
I dream all the time to, sometimes dreams do come true, it depends on how old you are and if you have enough time left to enjoy a dream. I know many who look for the low buck dream and spend their whole life looking while I have enjoyed some of my dreams a long time. There are plenty of good forty's for sale on ebay right now in the price range that many of these hambers mentioned.
i do that almost monthly when someone comes by asking about a 41 chev coe i got waiting its turn my normal answer is it aint for sale, to which i am almost always told "everything is for sale for the right price"
WOW!!!!....Are those things worth that much?....damn I shoulda kept that rust bucket I hauled to the scrapper last week.....
The car is worth how much you are willing to pay for it. Personally, I think your offer of $10,000 is a fair price. I paid $3,500 for a 40 Deluxe 12 years ago, with the car ready for paint, glass and interior, but running, driving, with new tires, mags, new wiring, a newly rebuilt 350-350 combo in it. I sold it for $20,000. You can probably find a running street rod for $30,000 to $35,000. Just my 2 cents.
I don't think you've given us enough information to work with. Might be worth closer to 30 than 10 ... hard to tell based on what I've read.
