Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Traditions Racing, Feb 24, 2011.

  1. I know there DOT approved, but who's runnin cheater slicks and is the man in blue writing you free passes to the Policemans Ball? I really want a set of Wide Whites for the 26, but with no fenders, am I asking for trouble? Thanks.

I'm not, but I also live in BFE Iowa, and am on the local fire dept. So I get away with more than I should at times.

Generally speaking, if you aren't doing anything stupid, the cops will usually leave you alone.

BUT. When he nabs you doing a burnout in front of the local hot dog stand, he's gonna get you for those cheater slicks and anything else he can think of.

    Good luck, -Abone.

  7. Thanks everyone, and I respect all the advice. Ive run slicks before, but in O/T full fender Mustangs and Chevelle kinda rides. I'll be the first to say, Florida Law Enforcement guy's and gal's are very cool in my book. Never a hassle unless you ask for it. I'm 53 and retired, and dont screw around on the streets. Let's just say my wifes chosen career path, is a reason for me to not become a nuisance to the local P.D. Like our friend flamedabone, I take it to the track when it's time to let off some steam.

I have had no problems with the law and I live in Florida.
I run a T bucket with no windshield and straight pipes on a blown slant six.
As long as you act like you should, they will give you no problems. Act like an "ASS" and they will treat you like one.
Where are you at in South Florida?

As said earlier most cops don"t know what slicks are anyway, but if the tires are stamped D.O.T. approved that alone is legal.Just be careful if you get caught in one of our famous afternoon downpours.

I've never heard of people having probs with them. I to like others ran actual slicks for years and never had a problem.

locals = no problem ** state troopers = you'll feel like a dump truck drove thru your underwear (at least in TN) - troopers will make chit up to write tickets for

A local constable checked out my Hurst's and thought they were the "cat's ass."
    (His words.)
"They still make those race tires?" he said....

We're very fortunate in this area to have the consideration of the law enforcement checking our vehicles in a way a fellow hobbyist would?
Many of the car enthusiasts ally with local charities and fund the unfortunate and maybe that plays a role in our ability to fracture a "scrub line" or power blast up a side street?
We're good citizens with hot rods?
Now those #!!!%^&!!!!# late model idiots flying thru town....

  19. live in western pa and no troubles here... got mine from towell city tires in north carolina and had them put 2 grooves in them though

Ran Hurst slicks/no grooves for several years in Arizona without no cop hassles. Both cars were fenderless so they were out in the open. Check with guys in your area to see if there have been any problems.

  21. Traditions;
I was at a car show last month (a Police benifit) and talked to the locals about my cheater slicks and open headers (with inserts) About five of them came over and looked and listened to my car and they all agreed that the only reason they would have pull me over was to ask about the car and engine, not for any violations.

  22. The trick to avoiding the invitation to meet important politicians is to get them grooved.

Around here the local constabulary pretty much will give you a pass if you are in a rod and not causing any trouble but most states require tread of some sort to be legal.

Diamond Back actually sells a good loking tire that you have smooth, pinners or wide whites that is recapped with tread that looks legal.

That Firestone cheater comes with sips around both outer edges, they didn't hook well back in the day but probably have a better tread compound now. Very good looking tire and can be had white walls or black I don't think that pinners is available on them. pretty sure that coker sells them.

Anyway the key is to have something that resembles tread. They were called cheaters back in the day because they came with grooves cut in them to get around the tread laws.

I got pulled over in up state NY in the rain, had to put some groves in w/ a hot tire knife to make everyone happy after going to court for a fixit ticket. The tires were DOT approved. Towel city radial piecrusts are really good tires so far.

  24. David, just ask a TN. trooper if they just got done doin the hokie-pokie with a porn star in the back seat of the cruiser, and see if they still want to right you up. That news last year made it to Florida, LMAO!!! I used to own 17 acres in Sevierville, I know all about those TN troopers, but thanks. I hear from some of you guy's in states like PA and NY, not getting hasseled, that's great to hear. I would have never guessed that. I went to college in Orange County New York, and traveled quite often to Port Jervis. That's where N.Y., Penn. and N.J. all meet together, and you get a good taste of how you need to act in diffrent states. Thanks guy's!!

  25. Rick, thanks for your input brother, maybe before the next show you can PM me, and I'll come down if I dont have a race somewhere.

I wouldn't worry about a ticket as much as getting caught in a rain storm and going into the bar ditch backwards.

My question on this has always been, Is being one of the cool guys running cheater slicks worth wrecking the car if you hit a patch of water and hydroplane the car?
Maybe in Arizona, Florida or Utah you can leave the house in the morning and drive a hundred miles or so to a rod trot and expect to get home without hitting rain but I've hit cloudbursts in Texas that rolled in from what were blue skys two hours before and have hit snow on the pass on the 28th of April on the way to a run in the Seattle area from here. Run them if you want but I'd think the risk of a ticket will be after the accident rather than before. Just something to think about as I have hydroplaned three times and gone into bar ditches with the 48 when I was running N-50's with fair tread, luckily with no damage or injury.

  28. Hey Mr.48, always glad to hear your input. Here in south Florida, you can pull out of your driveway in the blazing sun, and go 3 blocks and be in a torrential downpoor. Look into the rearview mirror, and see the same blazing sun behind you. I hear the other Florida HAMBers laughing cause they know what I'm talking about!!!! :D
