I've been playing drums since I was a little kid (and still play).

This intro vexes a lot of people, and I hate to break it to ya, but it's not an engine at all.

The intro is double tracked double bass drums to start (basically, it's an effects trick done by using a tape delay to double up the sound), then the double tracking is removed to just the regular double bass (the effects are stopped, and the "real" drumming is all that's left) accompanied by a 3-beat phrase tom-tom pattern that is repeated 6 times with the left hand, which is then followed up by a beat pattern similiar to a swing beat (all while the double bass is going). The final 9 bars of the intro the pattern "slows" a tad (don't know how to explain this very well to folks who don't play drums)...

Hot for teacher is probably one of the most requested things to play when people find out I'm a drummer.

Hope I didn't just kill the thread...

I always thought the intro to "T Model Boggie" by Rosco Gordon was much more HAMB appropiate than fucking Van Halen anything.

I don't usually post on threads like this, but I'm just blown away that this song was popular 27 years ago! When I was in high school in the fifties, all of our parents thought we should like Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, which were 15 years out of date at the time, and we thought they were absolutely ANCIENT!

I know lol, I never quite figured out how to do it myself, I know you gotta slide up witha slide but never got the technique down. It is pretty cool though...

I agree! Zeppelin, The Who, KISS, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, VH, Emerson Lake and Palmer, all that old stuff....

That sounds like a 37 cylinder radial aircraft engine recorded using a microphone patched through one of these.

What if we're talking about talking about engines that sound like drums that sound like engines that make people think the drums are engines when it's not an engine it's just drums trying to sound like an engine?

Wait...maybe I need a beer to sort this one out...

I had a 355 SBC with 10:1 Speed Pro forged pistons, a Comp XE268 cam, Vortec heads, MSD distributor, Weiand Action Plus intake with a Q-jet, and on open headers it sounded VERY similar to "Hot For Teacher"....it's funny you made this thread because we always joked about how much it sounded like the song. I'd say I was flying "Hot For Teacher" when I opened up the cutouts. :D

When they did it live Sammy played it on an old Gibson Lap Steel.
