You must use the torque convertor from a 360. They are balanced differently than the ones for the 273, 318, and 340. My experience: We put a 360 in place of a 273 in a 65 Barracuda and got bad vibrations.

    A stock 904 is considered maxed out with a 318, unless it's a late 70s smogger.

have a good rebuild done on your 904,get a good non balanced torque converter and get a flex plate from tci that will thake care of the weights on the torque converter issue.it works ive done it.

You can also look at the B&M flexplates that are designed for the balance mis-match.

727's were also made for the small block bolt pattern. If you want a trans that is absolutely, positively bulletproof, you could go up to one of those.

    That's what's usually behind a 340/360! & often with 318s in pick ups.

I ran a tricked out B&M 904 on my 340 a while back. Tore the mounting bosses off the inside of the case.

yea i know the 727 is most likely the better trans to go with but i was just looking as far as price at this time as i know i could get the 904 real cheap

904s have a lower first and second gear ratios than 727s. 2.70 vs 2.45 Second gear ratios are 1.54 vs 1.45

There's also 2 sizes for the flex plate to converter bolt pattern(might be part of the diffrence between 360 & non 360 converters).

Yes it will, or you can use the unbalanced converter with a balanced flexplate instead.........either way the 360 needs to be balanced EXTERNALLY!
If money was no object you could have the crank drilled and slugged to balance it.

You will find that 727s with the right converters for a 360 application are quite a bit more common than 904s. The wieghted flex plates others have mentioned will solve the problem too, though. just don't ignor the balance issue. To throw one more thought in the mix, how about a '88 - '91 518 overdrive? Common as dirt, almost every van and p/u had them. I know back there you guys have 55 mph limits and such so it isn't as nessesary, but I wouldn't build a car today with O/D personally.
