Was just reading another thread and it got me going about how this last Sunday, I had to replace the U joint on my OT pickup-on the side of the road.

People I talked to were amazed that I keep a few spare parts in the truck, along with tools to replace them.

Just wondering what you all consider essential items to keep in the trunk, under the seat, etc to help you deal with a side of the road fix? In the days of just calling AAA to get a tow home, does anyone even bother carrying tools anymore?

    For example:

One thing I carried in my '69 Nova-A distributor wrench. Until I wised up and ditched the chrome dist hold down, that thing would come loose at the most inconvenient times.

  2. A cell phone and a small assortment of tools.HRP

I've taken two cross-country, back road trips in my stock '55 Chevy pickup by myself. Both were just short of five thousand miles. I filled the pickup bed with tools, spare parts and supplies to ward off Murphy. It worked. No breakdowns! The only thing missing from the following list is the firearms, cell phone, AAA membership and navigator I carried. (The items in the following list designated as "0" is the current inventory. I had at least one of these items with me on the trips.)

Hey Laroke, if you got stuck you could just pull over and construct a new vehicle with all those parts.

Or stay put and homestead :D

I also carry a box of cigars. The first thing I do when I break down is smoke a cigar and let the panic bleed off. I find that if I think about the situation for about a hour before taking action, I can come up with a better solution. The cigar takes about a hour to smoke.

Good grief Laroke, it is a good thing that the weights and measure boys didn't stop you, I am sure that you were overweight!

That ain't a truck you were driving, it was a garage on 4 wheels! :D

I give you a ton of credit for traveling cross-country in an old pickup, alone. It takes some balls......and a ton of spares!

  18. I've been to the Nats in St. Paul,( 37 Chevy PU ) OK. City,( 41 Ford Coupe ) Columbus, ( 40 Chevy PU ) and never broke down. Three different cars. I carry a tire patch kit. a small tool box, and a cell phone with me now. I don't have much room in my roadster but I'm not making any long hauls anymore. I guess I've been lucky. I've had my Dads car club plaque on the back of all my cars, maybe he's looking down and keeping me running and safe. Thats my guess.

Aside from the tool box I carry. I always bring a blanket and Gloves. In arizona even trying to change a flat can cause 3rd degree burns.

  20. Holy crap ... Laroke, I don't think I have that much stuff in my garage/shed/loft/basement combined ...

I carry the "usual" tools plus a complete HEI, an alternator, fuel pump, tire repair plug kit, and some bulbs ... oh, and I bring the wife in case I need a push.

I carry a small toolbox with basic tools, a small floor jack, a couple of jackstands, oil, coolant, & a cell phone. I try to keep up on maintenance to make carrying a bunch of parts aroud unnecessary. Sounds like some of y'all might as well just tow another complete vehicle, just to be sure.:D
I mean, how do you predict what is going to break unless your car is prone to breaking this or, that? I guess it more dependes on where you are going and whant you are driving.
I think the biggest road side repair I have ever done was nothing more than a water pump. Not real fun, but do-able.

A small tool bag with a rachet set, wrenches and pliers.\/ screwdrivers. I feel if you built it right it shouldn't let you down. I travel 5-6000 miles every year and no major issues 9for the past 30 years)

I don't expect to break down. I fix my shit before I leave, not on the side of the road.
However- I do carry a AAA card, a cell phone, a small tool box that fits under the seat, padded straps for the flatbed tow guy (you know he won't have any), a rubber mallet for the knock-offs & that's about it.
I drive somewhere almost every weekend. Routine maintenance will limit the amount of breakdowns.

I've found out over the years that no matter what you pack in the car- that won't be the part that fails anyway.

Each one of my vehicles has a small box with a BFH, a few screwdrivers, 6" crescent, cheapo 1/4" socket set, utility knife, pliers, needlenose, vice grips electrical tape, duct tape, wd40, a flashlight and shop rags.

There are usually radiator hoses, belts, bulbs oil, tranny and brake fluid and a couple gallons of water or 50/50 on board too.

    -bailing wire
    -screw drivers
    -duct tape
    -two adjustable spanners
    -flash light
    -couple hand guns
-copy Jack kerouacs "On the Road"
And I got this sweet little vintage metal tool box in olive drab with a leather handle. All fits nicely inside. And of course the cell phone!

    BULLSHIT OR EXPERIENCE......
I JUST TAKE THE OLE LADY , SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING.(batteries not included) NO , REALLY , SHE DOES.

  30. For my 55 Safari I carry the following:
A 1 gallon gas can(empty and taped closed to prevent fumes escaping).
A 1 gallon antifreeze bottle filled with water.
A Craftsman plastic tool box (the thin briefcase style)with tools including a GM distributor tool.
    A pair of heavy gloves.
A long heavy duty tow strap.
4 small folding wheel chocks I picked up at a yard sale.
A 10 ton bottle jack that fits under the frame even with a flat tire(I checked).
    An inflated spare tire(checked monthly).
1 quart of ATF and engine oil stored under the hood in the old windshield washer reservoir bracket.
A funnel with a 2ft long tube attached for pouring ATF stored in front of the radiator held in plce by the hood prop rod(an old sword cane my brother-in-law gave me for Christmas one year).
    Parts include:
    Points,condenser,rotor,distributor cap and ballast resistor.
    Fuel filter.
    3ft.length of fuel line.
Hose clamp assortment(2 each to fit radiator and heater hoses).
Several cable ties including long ones.
    Small coil of safety wire.
    Spare V-belt.
2 good LED flashlights including one with a magnetic base that has a built-in red flashing LED display.Stick on fender to act as a warning flasher.
A pair of safety glasses with built-in lights.
A WORKING fire extinguisher.Changed every two years as are the ones in my garage.

Most of the stuff is in with the spare tire. The A/F and gas cans are slid in beside the rear seat as is the tool box.The parts are stored under the rear seat.Which reminds me I have to replace the generator and starter brushes I had in my parts box.

In the past 16 years I've logged nearly 170,000 miles on the car and have had very few problems.Had the rear U-joint bolts loosen up once;lost an inner wheel bearing in Boston;luckily a replacement was readily available.Reminds me I have to add those to my parts box;inners are NLA.Luckily I have 6 in my parts inventory.
Radiator plugged up once;cleaned it out with Liquid Plumber on the road and it worked fine for almost a year afterward.Generator grenaded once almost setting the interior on fire(damn vent windows!).Luckily I found a replacement.Brake anchor pin lock fell off once(my fault)and ground the piss out of my new drum and the air shocks blew out on the same run. Both easy fixes once I got the parts.
