If I add a dual carb setup and a fenton split header to my 235, will I notice much of a power increase? I really want to keep the stock 3 on the tree and everything and from what I've been told on here, adding a V8 to it isn't easy or worth while. Does anyone know what the numbers might be for horsepower and/or torque increase with this setup? It's kind of a lot of money to spend if it isn't going to help much.
I put duals on my 38 chevy 216 with split exhaust and a Isky cam. The car runs great, way more power.
When I installed a McGurk dual setup on the 235 in my '53, the biggest improvement was in the 40-70mph time--it cut it in half. Also, when you've got the carbs dialed in properly, it will actually increase your fuel mileage.
Hmmm. I might have to give it a try. I do like the way it looks. Thanks everyone! Now off to find a good used intake and pair of headers.
Changing to a t5 made a huge difference for me. There really isn't much you can do to hurt performance, anything helps.
Absolutly a huge improvement. The stock intake on the 235 is awful. The stock exhaust is not good either. Exhaust was the first thing I did on my 235 . Fentons and duals w/ Smitty's. Huge improvement right there. Updated ignition to a HEI. Another biggie. Modified my stock intake to take a 2GC Rochester. Another great improvement. With the above changes I was able to get 20 mpg and decent power and great drivability. I thought I'd go drag racing and was shocked to see 20 second 1/4 mile times, I really thought it would be a little better. Changed to an Offy dual w/ 2 B's and started tuning for the 1/4. Got to a best of 17.3 ET and 80 mph. But highway mileage dropped to 16. Now I am tuned in for highway and don't race anymore. It's still peppy, but must not be optimum for performance. The highway mileage is now 25. The drivability (smoothness and transitions) is almost as good as with the 2GC, but a lot more power. This is with a Howard cam M4F, 4 speed and 2.93 rear. Radial tires. Frank
Did you notice that it said the Corvette exhaust manifold could be had for $18 and truck mufflers were $6.75 each? Times have sure changed.....
You will notice a large performance increase. But w/ more air/fuel you gotta add more fire. Upgrade to HEI distributor for an even cheaper performance increase.
I had a holley 390 4bbl on my old 235, IMO it ripped over any carb setup of had in the past! Just dosent look as cool as multi setup
....and if you worked in a garage, and got the 25 percent discount for a wholsale account, that brought it down to $13.50! I'll take a dozen of 'em.
No, send it to me, and I'll submit all of the parts to a test that will last for several years. Once I'm done collecting all of the data, I'll let you know how good it is.
haha. funny but true. yeah, do the swap for sure, its all bolt on stuff and makes a noticable difference.. also, dont forget the powerglide rear end! better highway gears.
I just got done with 235 swap from 216, it has all the goodies...try to stay away from the Rochester carbs they like to leak....alot!!! Also I plan to swap either to pertronix or hei, but the new motor even without being tuned "right" is a screamer!!!
Curt B, thanks for the link! What a great article to read for this subject. It would be cool to find a complete '54 Corvette intake and exhaust with the 3 side draft carbs. It would probably be way too pricey though. Good to know on the powerglide rear end too!
