In Tucson (PHX Native) ...I'd rock a fan shroud my man...You can get a real nice black composite (lightweight) for about $100.00 online...LMC wants way too much though. Look around...you'll be doing that motor, fan, radiator, yourself...a solid.

I agree with the fan shroud being a huge help.
I don't have my factory shroud mounted yet, though.
I've got an 18-inch 7-blade OE steel clutch fan, and even though it's set back three feet from the radiator, that fan will pull a sheet of paper tight to the radiator at idle, and keeps things cool pretty well.
I expect it'll pull small birds out of the air once I get the shroud on.

Why not go with an electric fan?

Because if an electric fan dies, it's dead. It not only stops cooling, but now it becomes an air-blocker to restrict whatever flow you can get through the radiator.

When is the last time you heard of a mechanical fan failing?

The fan Clutch fails quite often. Mechanical fans cause water pump bushings to wear and leak, plus used up HP. There is pros and cons with both. The fans seem to be pretty reliable if wired correctly with a relay and the right size gauge wire. Just wondering.

It was over 100 when I picked it up. It stayed at 180 all the way home, but stoplights are what gets you....... The 3 row radiator appears to be in good shape. It has more issues than just cooling, but it is rare for me to be able to actually drive a new project home. I got rid of that heater hose and cleaned it up a bit. It has power steering too!!! (not the ram but a box)

I think running mechanical and electrical fans is probably best. That is what my '47 has.

This truck will probably end up with an LS motor and a 5 speed manual, but I will probably change my mind 10 times before I get to it. This will probably be a winter project.

Yes, it has all the stock dimensions...all the way down to the lower radiator hose surround...

    Fits perfect...predrilled holes...no modification needed...

  20. If you ask a repair tech, you will find that a good quality fan clutch will outlast an aftermarket electric fan that costs twice as much by several times. And a flex fan will last pretty much forever (those are the ons that simply never fail).
If you ask an engineer, you will find that for the volume of air moved, a mechanical fan draws less engine power than an electric fan, on a vehicle with an engine driven charging system.

Plus, electric fans are kinda ugly.

I am a repair tech, and I asked myself. :D Electric fan and a flex fan worked great for me for over 15 years on the same 56 Belair.I lived in Vegas, and High Desert California. Never over heated even in the Vegas traffic.

here's a peek at my new beater i'm just finishing up throwing together.

here's what it started as, a pretty sweet mullet-mover:

it was a legit 2x4 custom cab bbw shortbed w/chrome. some jagoff took off all the trim and dropped it on a late model 4x4 frame.

two months of weekends and playing hooky from work:

back to what it should be! it'll get bodywork later. for now i did spray some flake on the roof and dash.

dig the duct tape windshield seal. the result of watching three glass guys try for three hours to install a windshield with the stainless trim, then without the trim, still failing, and these guys specialize in antique auto glass! he says bring it by his house on sunday, i call and he blows me off again, so i finally did it myself after these pics. i didn't do too bad, only broke it once.

the seats are late 60's t-bird, i was gonna run impala buckets but they just took up too much leg room.

Check out post #699 on page 35 of this thread. Then go to a junkyard or ebay. I bought mine on ebay for $30 shipped.
