Anyone ever seen a differential like this? This differential is in a fiat alterd I aquired a while back. The center pumkin is magnesium. The diff cover is magnesium and has RAMCHARGERS cast on it. The axle tubes bolt to flanges on the pumkin housing. The bearing caps are attached by bolts that go in the front of pumkin and screw into the bearing caps.It has floating axles.
My buddy, Al Bergler runs one in his "Motown Shaker" funny car that he restored. It's the original one since he built the car in the 70's.
I was going to say I've never seen one but Mike's buddy Al Bergler proves they must exist. Still got to be a really rare bird. Frank
I never saw one before this one. A friend of mine bought the fiat in Columbus,OH about 25 years ago. He bracket raced it for about 15 years. Never had any problems with it.
Now the question is did the Ramchargers ever sell these rear ends or maybe salvaged from a wrecked car or did a few simply make it out the "back door"?
The rear ends were made by ramchargers. They mounted the master cylnder to the rear ends so changing them at the track did not en-tail bleeding the brakes. Im not sure if they sold them, or if they were "given" to a few select racers, but racers that used then were Shirley Mildowney(sp?), Al bergler, Terry Seaton and several others. A very nice piece and liteweight also. Its defently a keeper. How you doin Todd? Johnny Rotten
They were common years ago. That was an advanced version of the standard Dana 60 before 9" Fords became popular.
I have seen them in funny cars, altereds, and some pro stocks over the years. Exotic and bulletproof. Don't think they made a bunch but you do see them pop up more often than you would think for some reason. I believe they were manufactured by Henry's for the Ramchargers.
xracer40, Thanks for the E-mail. I thought I deleted that wanted ad but will have to revisit and see. I have the Magnesium rearend for the Ramcharger Demon F/C. The one you have is for Pro-Stock and is pricey, which is good for you. Johnny Rotten is correct on his info and I think they sold a few of these out of the Ramchargers shop. With the nostalgia resto's going on, I would think someone would be looking for this. It may have been bought for the car you have it on? Thanks again for your response, Jim at Colwood Motorsports, Caro, Michigan
Johnny Rotten, Wish you could make it to the Pumpkin Festival here in Caro Oct. 8th 2011 at the car show. Would like to have you idle your car down main street ahead of Al Bergler. Request that you try to work it out for us? Otherwise see you later. Jim @ Colwood
We had one in an old short F/C chassis by Ken Cox ,it was sold to a sand drag guy that was putting some serious HP to that thing and don't think he ever broke it. It had 33 spline axles. I knew it was a keeper and valuable to someone restoring an early F/C but I couldn't convince my partner (ex !) .
I re-did one one back in the 80's. It was under a 70 Camaro Super Gas car. It must have been an old pro stock. I put new housing tubes on it. I remember it being extremely light even when I put the gear set and axles back in it. It be a good one to re-produce in todays aluminum castings.
I just bought a Henry's Machine Dana magnesium. I've been looking for one of these for years. I can't believe how thick the casting is.
