Does anybody know of anyone who either has a 1950 Delco-Remey 6 volt generator, or any body who rebuilds them Thanks in advance
These guys are clear across the country from you but they are definitely good at what they do. They've been around a long time and rebuild just about anything. P & G Rebuilders Of Starters & Generators‎ 268 Islip Avenue, Islip, NY 11751-2818 (631) 581-3324‎ Good luck!!
Hells bells.....!! Rebuild it yourself. It's easy. Unless the armature or field coils are shorted out all you need is a couple of bushings, and the brushess. If the stator is too worn (grooved) to clean up with some emery paper, take it to a machine shop and have it smoothed out. Just make sure there is enough material on left on the stator to get a smooth surface. If it doesn't you will need a new armature anyway. SAFU
The whole thing is ceased up because the bearings were never greased and its just shredding the belt... ive gotten it to spin but it squeal like hell
Ack! It might be time to consider switching over to a 12 volt system with a single wire alternator. However, ---- if the armature bearing surface is OK, and you really like the 6 volt thing, you might be able to put in new bushings and brushes, and get some more miles out of the generator. It would not hurt to tear it down and see if it can still be fixed. (I seriously doubt it is fixable, but you never know until you try.) Was it making juice when it seized up? SAFU
