    GaryC.

I have been thinking about this topic for quite a while.
I'm not even sure if it is a relevant question.
Hot rods are such an expression of ones individuality.
Is it even possible to come to a common conclusion?

Let's have your opinion and a picture if you have one.

For me; it's this one. Nacho Gonzalez has been working
on this one for ten years now. Each part carefully picked.
Nothing that isn't needed is just hung on it.
Minimalism carried to a logical end.
It's not old school or what some might call traditional,
    but I think that it captures the essence of hot rodding;
    the expression of individuality.

As Nacho put it, "it's about the look."

GaryC, you might want to explain how this particular rig is a trend setter and where an when it has been featured or shown or shown up on the net or in the rod rags except in that one photo you posted.

I see another cookie cutter overly chopped rig with hot lick tall tires and an interesting flathead with zooomies that would give me a severe headache before I made it from my driveway to the Branding Iron Cafe.

The rigs that have influenced me are the well built A-v8/32 coupes and sedans that look a guy could jump in one and take off 2500 miles without batting an eye except to make sure that the pre-trip checks and services were made.

the car was given a 14 page feature in The Rodders Journal (#37)
    ...if that counts for anything.

Read the article. They seemed to think it was... well; ok.

It might be because this forum is for traditional rodding.

Influential can be for better or for worse. Like it or not, the "Rudy" truck set a whole trend of bobber trucks. Not saying it was the first but it seems to be a launching pad for that look. Influential, yes. My cup of tea, no.
For me some of the most influential cars of the decade have been the Rolling Bones coupes with their agressive looks and quality. Also the way they set up their frames (wheelbase, etc.) seem to have influenced alot of builds I have seen.

The Nacho Gonzalez car is pretty neat.
I think some peoples idea of a "rat rod" is a little overbearing. I hate poorly crafted, spider webbed, skull hood ornament, stop sign floor panel rust buckets. But I have seen pictures of cars from the 50's that if they were built today someone would pick on for being a rat rod. Heres a good example of my point.

Thanks loudandfast13.Someone that knows his history well. Some of the "new" stuff coming out lately is no different than in the old days. They just didnt make mag covers. We can go round and round about what excepted and not by some but the way I see it,if it vintage American tin and its being saved from being scrapped and sent overseas to be made into tuners,I dont care what someone else thinks of my ride or someone elses.Build something and drive it

I am not a fan of the term rat rod. I wonder what people that were around when the term hotrod was coined thought of it?

Gosh Gary, it's unreal to see a hero of one aspect of the H.A,M.B. to be the villain of another! I think that alot of rods were built like that in the last ten years, that's for sure, (I've never seen Nachos though) I'm trying to think of my favorite.

    The Rolling Bones.

Chris Casney's coupe will influence more people to build top quality "finished" traditional cars.

Sorry, meant them as two different styles, and no they aren't.

Didn't the RJ article state that Nacho's car wasn't driveable? Rolling Bones build alot of nice stuff as does Brizio, and there stuff gets driven.

Not much posted I care for. Shock rods & scenesters.

About as good as it gets for me. JJ Barnhardt's 5 window.

  29. The book "How to Build A Traditional Ford Hot Rod" by Mike Bishop and Vern Tardel was published in 2000. This decade or the last is hair splitting. The most influential hot rod in the past ten years was "Old Bluey," the roadster build that was documented in the book. It brought traditional hot rodding in the purest sense back to the mainstream of our hobby. Something built yesterday or last year can be impressive. But hardly most influential when measured over ten years.

  30. This car had the biggest influence on me. Steve and Josh changed my entire way of thinking when it comes to hot rods.
