Hey ALl, If you were to define automotive painting technique "Scallops" what would it be? I am trying to explain it to a nephew, and he doesnt get it, and frankly I dont know if I do either.. Square flames? Thanks
Tell him; Scallop design is abstract representation of the natural forms present in scallop mollusk shell shapes.
How old is the kid? Really long triangles.... simple enough. Wouldn't 2-D flames just be called, well flames?
Scallop: 1.A Painting style that is used to accent sensual body lines by attrackting the eye to flow with the bodyline, stance and shape of the car. 2.To make uninteresting large panels pop with character by causing the eye to flow in a particular dirrection, hence the large to small design. NOT to be mistakend for panelling or flames, though there are variations including sclames and panels that end in a scallop fashion. Personally I believe a GOOD Scallop job is harder to pull off then flames. Flames detract the eye from the car, Scallops must flow with the car and be much more symetrical than flames. imho
i hate scallops-sorry. looks like someone took a paint brush to it, cause they couldn't do flames. hated them then, hate them now. leave scallops to fish and potato's. now, do you want to know what i really think!!!!!!!!!!!
Scallop as a design is related to the sea shell design in nature. When applied to automotive design they are elongated out to a point usually. Extremely difficult to do right.
Now that was the answer I was looking for.. AWESOME! Thanks.. Now here is another question.. IS my car considered "Scalloped"?... I didnt paint this car. This is how I bought it.. It is going to get painted though in a year or 2, but for now I can live with it. Scalloped.....
I would define scallops as Just Plain Cool or Neato Bandito if they are applied correctly on the proper car. They are something that takes time to perfect. I agree that scallops are harder to pull off than flames. They need to become part of the body to show the lines of the car. They are not a distraction like most flames. They a reason to look at the whole car to see where the next line takes your eye. Here are a few pics of my old car. These are Watson style scallops from the famed painter Larry Watson. Hope is helps.
Tony I'd personally say Sclames aka scallop flames. Very popular mid 80ish on the verge of "graphic" instead of Paint technique. Notice they are there to detract the eye from the rest of the car instead of complimenting the car as a whole. NOT saying that's always a bad thing, just depends on what your after. "traditional" flames do the same thing detract the eye, but if your looking for a bold statement thats whatcha want to go with Scallops imho shouldn't catch all of your attention, The sneakytiki's example is a GREAT ONE!
i dont know what the hell you would call this maybe really really bad lightning that's to nice of a car to have that stuff on there
