These guys are from my area, about 40 miles away on the Iowa side of the river, Mississippi River that is. LeClaire is a small river town on the river a few miles above the Quad Cities. Our local economy is in the toilet, if these guys can make a buck doing something they enjoy good for them. The old guys they bought the stuff from would have never seen a penny for it otherwise. I recognized about 75% of the roads they were on because I've driven those same roads and have been past their shop before. Those "honest hardworking people" ( and they ARE ) picked most of that stuff up for pennies at farm auctions or pulled it out of somebody else's junk pile for free. I know a hundred old farts just like the ones on the show and if some "picker" didn't get it now somebody else would just pick it up at the estate auction later for a HELL of a lot less! Providing the county didn't make them clean the place up first. Most of the stuff they bought would have ended up in the landfill or scrap yard. For those old boys it was like hitting the lottery.

I'm surprised the scrappers hadn't already stolen most of it when scrap was sky high! A lot of places like those got cleaned out. In one of the TV ads he talks about having a gun in his face, he ain't makin' it up. I know more than a couple old codger's that will meet you at the door with a loaded shotgun if they don't recognize you and sometimes if they do. I've had it happen. I had changed cars and pulled into an old guy's place I knew, his wife didn't recognize the car and came out and met me halfway across the yard. When she realized who it was I heard a click as she eased the hammer down on the .357 in the pouch of her sweatshirt! I know for a fact she was a damn good shot with it, and from a lot farther away than I was.

I turned it off after that, it was like taking candy from a baby. I felt bad for the guy.

If it makes you feel any better my Father in law punched the fat guy in the face their senior year.

yes they are from my area and my in laws live near them. Leclaire is definately not a big city, to be called city slickers.

They are just doing what we all do but they have TV show about it.. im jealous. I just don't like how they brag about their profit, its going to inflate the prices big time.

Overhaulin' in 7 days, OK that's fake. American Pickers have been doing this a long time and before them there were (are) people that have been doing it even longer. Fake American pickers, seriously???

Damn city slickers. (<---- that's a sarcastic smiley BTW.)

  10. gotta say these guys bringing things out of old buildings,barns,sheds... is really cool! they deserve to be compensated for their efforts. i mean be real people don't buy cars to flip so they can lose money!

  11. By far, the best part of the show!

(& I actually liked it pretty good)

I agree with most of you the D-bags who host the show will end up getting it taken off the air. I feel bad for both the guys who they "stole" the stuff off of and for the rest of us guys who genuinely like old stuff to have. We will get robbed anytime we find something cool we want to add to our garages because there is a "market" for it now.

Too much commercialism. With EVERYTHING! Blah!

I kinda liked the show, but talk about ripping old folks off. I understand that they need to make a living, but the people they were dealing with didn't seem to have a concept of what they were selling, or the value. Besides, did the 2 guys seem like assholes, or was it just me, the taller guy (kevin?) needed to get his ass beat just for fun.

I thought the girl working the phones is very good looking... i liked the show just hope like everyones saying it wont inflame the prices on our jems we find. my .02 its a million times better then watching that damn Mtv crap

  17. Here, here! :p
But the more I watched her..., I mean the show, I believe she's just an admin (a hot one at that) for the two guys, not attached either one.

Did you catch when Kevin asked her if she used her "1-900" voice, and she replied something about how the ol'guy might not "still love her" after the two guys show up to do the dickering?

I also agree, the "antiques" are great eye candy (I remember seeing all the stuff growing up in the farmlands of Minnesota), but it's basically The Antique Roadshow goes rural.

Would love to see the out-takes reels (and the producers standing there with the stack of liability/permission forms).

  18. you could tell those guys were tryin hard to dress down for the area they were in.
looked more like the dockers and deck shoes types to me.
they looked really exited f*%king a hiroshima veteran who was barely coherent enough to understand what they were saying.
i bet his kids are really happy someone came along and took advantage of their elderly dad.
    nice work "american douchebags".

Im still up in the air on this one...sure I would love to do what they do...but I wouldnt be bragging about how i just made "an awesome deal". I guess the bottom line for me is that neither of those two dicks would last more than ten seconds on my property.

It was interesting. I don't care about the commercial end but it's still cool to see what someone finds. The carnival ride alone was worth watching the show. That was pretty killer.

If it was me though, there is no way I'd participate. I don't want everyone knowing what I find and what it's worth. Nobody is ripping anyone off either if they ask what someone wants for an item and just ponies up.

Stupid story, but....... I was at the local flea market Saturday. There was a box with 8 Frito Bandito's in it. It obviously had sat there awhile. Nobody had paid attention to them.

I asked the guy (a long time dealer who knows a lot of stuff) what he wanted for the pencil toppers (that's what they are). He laughed and said that he wondered what they were. He said how about .25 cents each? I handed him his two bucks.

On eBay they will sell for $15-$25 each. It's a flea market. The dealer sets a price. i didn't dicker, I just handed him his money.

Was I supposed to give him $50? He probably paid $1 for the entire box worth of stuff. (There was other stuff in the box).

  21. It's a tough call...it's cool to see all the stuff that's out there still...even though some of that stuff is worth ten times what they paid for it and more...I am sure alot of that stuff was scrounged for free or for a portion of what they paid for it by the sellers shown on the show...
Sure the stuff is definitely worth more but what are the odds that somebody is gonna show up in rural Iowa and give the old fella what it is worth...not very likely...
Another thing to consider is some of the people might have garnered a bit of a thrill by knowing they were gonna get their 15 seconds of fame and gladly signed the release forms and got themselves on tv.
I wish they would just focus on the scavenging portion of the show and the negotiations and not divulge what they finally sold for...all this being said I would love to have one of those aluminum bodied carnival cars in my shop or bonus room
I would rather them just show what they paid for it and not what they eventually sell for it..

They should give that guy with the amusement park rides that drove around the semi truck with a BEAR in it his own show. Now that's something I would watch over and over.

  24. There is a local antiques dealer that is highly unscrupulous. He is the guy that combs the obits and hits on the grieving families like a vulture. I usually check out what he has for sale in his store and one day I spied a box of N.O.S. bakelight switches from the thirties and forties....I ended up only paying $20.00 for the whole box after talking him down from $25.00. Three switches out of the box sold for almost $300.00 U.S. At an estate sale that the guy was running "he bought the entire estate and was reselling the stuff" I bought a pile of old magazines and books. He named the price and I paid the $40.00. I then sold 2 of the books for $200.00. Do I feel guilty? Not a chance....payback is a bitch. I feel sorry for all of the families the guy fleeced....

  25. Great show unless your grand parents got scammed out of all you dads childhood toys for 65.00 like mine did. Put yourself in the shoes of the children and grandchildren of the people featured. They sold items to people that have one thing on their mind, profit. Taking advantage of the ederly by waving a few bucks under their noses is discusting . These people should be ashamed of themselves. Fnnnnnnnnn theives!!

I thought it very tasteless to get on the phone and start bragging about the find right in front of the guy you just bought it from. I think the hosts of the show go about this in the wrong way. This old stuff is hard enough to come by, let alone get on the good graces of the owners. We don't need people like this making it harder, then rubbing it in their face. Not much class in my opinion.

Exactly. Some of you may say that the old guy named the price, but it was obvious that he was out of touch. Would you still think it was fine if they'd gotten him to sign over the farm to them and left him homeless? It happened in my wife's family, and it happens a lot more often than you'd think, especially with some of the drugs some of these Dr's are prescribing that basically turns many elderly people into zombies. Those guys took advantage of that nice old guy, plain and simple.
