i have a pair of cal custom valve covers that have been chrome plated. i wanna paint between the fins. is there any way to prep the chrome so the paint will stick?
CHOP...sure people do it all the time, don't even have to sand. just wipe between the fins, well to get oil and dirt off. that's it and good luck. this is 1 of the few times i like painted chrome. man your going to love the result...POP.
I just cleaned them good and brushed the red enamel on and wiped the excess off the fins with lacquer thinner as soon as the enamel started drying . HRP
i did one set with enamel primer and painted the polishe d out area and had some paint com loose when demasking, would be best to skuff pad the areas to be painted, also did my OTB aircleaner tops, this stuff looks nice
First - wax&grease remover. Second - scuff with red scotch-brite. Third - paint (or prime and paint). That's how we learned to do it at tech school and it works for me.
one shot will stick good for brushed applications. for spray , id go the bulldog, or etch primer route that has been mentioned. painting over chromed cast parts like valve covers seems to last ,unlike other chromed parts such as bumpers skull
run a scotch brite through between the fins because sometimes the surface might be to shiny and smooth for the paint to stick which might allow it to chip off
House of Kolor makes a product called adhereto that is specially designed for preparing chrome surfaces for paint. My plater recommended it. http://houseofkolor.com/products/specialty.jsp
