just got hamb friendly. my new 49 packard

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mikevango, Sep 21, 2009.

  1. picked this up last weekend. found it on craigslist. don't know too much about it yet, but i love it even it if it is a four door. straight 8 (starts right up), 3 on the tree (needs some adjustment). it needs work but is a runner/driver. drove it home 50 miles or so.
i am thinking some nicer hub caps and root beer metal flaked roof. need to get the wipers, turn signals, tail/brake lights to work and i will be driving the wheels off of it. also need to repair the gas tank and get the brakes working better (they are a little jerky when applied).
anybody else have a custom packard? i'd love to see 'em.

I always liked those 49-50 Packards as well as Nash and Hudsons of that era ,but im weird .Nice find and good luck with it.It looks real solid...

  7. Good looking car for sure. I never paid a lot of attention to Packards until just recently. A friend of mine is in love with them and is looking for one right now. He'll be jealous and drooling over your score when he sees this post. Have fun with the car, I'm sure that you will.

Neat ride .... I love the strange stuff!:D

I think I'd be tempted to get 'er straightened out mechanically, pop a set of trim rings on with the stock hubcaps and style!

  9. Got two in the back yard. Not as nice as yours but they were real cheap.

  11. want to change the tail lights to something a bit cooler, these are boring. any suggestions. maybe something that would fit on the corners.

I think, keep the hubcaps, just add beauty rings. I had a '50 for a couple of years in the 1960s, good dependable ride that I wasn't smart enough to appreciate at the time.

  13. '50 Packard tail lights are oval and are on the corners of the body in a nice chrome housing. I have a set on my '50 Packard and I'm keeping 'em. Sorry, no pix.

  14. Yea I think I seen those 50 tail lights before. I am gonna be on the look out for them.
The original caps I have are not shiny at all or I wouldn't be thinking about any other ones.

I dig that car man. I kinda feel,...lookin at your car,.... it took almost 60yrs to get it lookin like it is and it still looks good. Keep the mods simple and just drive the piss out of it.

I was thinking oval lights. I'd move the backup light to underneath the bumper, or get rid of it all together. Nice score.

'49 Packards are Big, Beautiful Crusiers. I have a 4 door Special in the family. The 327 Straight 8's are torque monsters and sound awesome. At one point in time Edmunds made both high compression aluminum heads and multi carb intakes. They do show up at swap meets and flea-bay from time to time. Keep your eyes open, and you might find something.

I like those big ol' boats, too!

Always figured that if one ever came my way, I'd paint it OD, put stars on the doors, flags on the front and call it "General Delivery" :D
