Casting numbers are: On the back side of the block behind the distributer 3970010 And on the passenger side front pad are 2 sets of numbers. They are: V0504TXD and right under it is: C7J163823. I bought the motor off craigslist. The guy said it was a 327, I have quite a few small block chevs sitting here, but none have any numbers stamped on the front pad of the motor. I know one of the numbers is a partial vin, but can anyone tell from what kind of car. I havent pulled the heads or the oil pan yet so I don't know if it's a 2 or 4 bolt main, or what the bore size is. Any help on decoding the numbers is appreciated. Thank you
The 010 should mean that it is a 350 but here's the google list for suffix numbers http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...=1&q=small+block+chevy+suffix+numbers&spell=1 It shouldn't take you five minutes to figure it out on your own. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
go to mortec.com, it lists all sbc blocks. yours says to be either a 1969 302 if its a 4 bolt, a 1969 327 truck and industrial, or a 69-80 2 or 4 bolt 350.
Bingo...we have a winner It was originally installed in either a 3/4 or 1 ton truck I was typing that too, but hit the wrong button and closed out the site...I still do not know how to use these damn computers!
Just checked my chilton's 70 - 77 Mostly all numbers start with a c .Try truck. That casting number 397010 could be 350, 327 or even 305 Good luck .If you could get crank casting number,
010 block is indeed a 350 only block. if it has an 8" balancer, it's probably a 4 bolt main. they were built 2 and 4 bolt main.
In 69 the 3970010 block was used for 302, 327 and 350's. Same 4" bore, different rotating assemblies.
It should be a 4 inch bore block but as someone else said it could be a 302/big journal 327 or 350 depending on the crank and yes they do come with both two and four bolt mains. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
I just got one of these short blocks but mine has TYZ at the beginning which if I remember was a 75 truck 165 4 conv cab, mine was a 4 bolt main.
If you can get access to an old Motors or Chilton manual, there were listings with those numbers to tell you what car, engine and the tranny that came with it. I believe if you are looking for a 327.....it would be from 1962 up to 1969 I think was the last year....all 2 bolt main blocks. Good luck hunting
At any rate if the block is in good shape it should be a good base to build a strong engine with. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">

kinda old thread....but this partial VIN shows that it's a 1977 Chevy truck engine from a truck that was assembled in Janesville WI. C means Chevy truck (1 means Chevy car, T means GMC, 2 means pontiac, etc) 7 is the last digit of the model year, but starting 1980 they switched to letters J is the assembly plant 163823 is the last 6 of the VIN
