I was going to weld my front bumper together and clean it up when someone told me there are some called "smoothies" available. I just cant seem to find them for my car. Does anyone know where I could get one?
Well aside from this guy ( owner of the local chrome shop), I have never heard them called smoothies either. He said he had ordered some in the past-but I have heard his markup is killer... It might just be best to stick to stock and just go with welding the 3 piece together.
Chevy of the 40's has one piece bumpers for your Chevy. Also they can be found on Ebay. They run about $325 a piece. I have heard one piece bumpers called smoothies when the bolts are welded to the inside of the bumper and the outside is smooth.....thus smoothies.
well my 54 pontiac bumpers are one pieces, but they still have the holes for the hangers, and they need to be re-chromed, but i think i have 2 fronts and backs.. let me know if your interested, and i'll take photos, and you can go from there..
i dont think anyone is actually making the original "california" bumpers anymore... they are out there, but not cheap
My bad.....the bumpers are for 49-52 front and rear one piece. http://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail/20002.html Rechromed bumpers from restoration chrome are good. http://www.restorationchrome.com/index.htm Or...try a 1955 chevy one piece bumper. http://www.classicchevy.com/product.asp?dept_id=1441&pf_id=02-162
Has anyone ever tried a 55 front bumper on a 54 Chevy? Im just wondering how well it fits...too wide maybe?
The bumpers on my 53 pontiac are also one piece but still have visible bolts. When a friend and i compared them to his 54 chev they appeared the same but swaped end for end. As in the chev rear matched my front and vice versa.
The front and rear bumpers on my 54 were 1 peice, I may sell them if you are interested. Here is a pic with 56 Chev bumpers, similiar to 55. Some minor mods were required.
This is a pic of mine before in re-installed the grille. The bumper is welded together and molded into the body
IMO - a 55 chevy bumper looks like schit on a 54! 56 is the way to go - thats what "all the cool guys are doing"... : )
Tell me about the 55 bumper that's for sale. Who did the work? Is it wavy like the Danchuk ones? Thanks, Mike
My 55 bumper is a one piece but isn't smoothed out yet. I can smooth it out for you if you'd like for a nominal fee.
Amazing thing the Internet. Google "California Smoothie Bumpers" and here is just one that popped up from Hemmings magazine. Parts For Sale 1946-1962 Chevrolet bumpers Location: LOS ANGELES, California (Google Map - Yahoo! I recently pick up a flyer from the Bumper Boys at a swap meet. I was interested in one piece bumpers without holes. The call theirs "Smoothies" by the way. Price is $850.00 each outright and $650.00 each with exchange. Plus freight I am sure. John
There are a lot of complaints about the Bumper Boyz that is true. What I found is if you go to where they are (i.e. swap meet or car show) and check out the bumper you are buying first you will get a good one. If you mail order with them you may get one with irregularities. Just my two cents worth.
like was said before the 49-52 Chevy bumpersd are one piece. i have a set (front/back) from a '50 chevy with brackets, bumer guards etc that i'll sell you for $400. pm me if you would like some pics, that goes for anyone else out there that is interested too!
