My friend just picked this intake up and does not know anything about it. It has two plenums (plenumii?) and the carb tops/velocity stacks look aftermarket. Manufacturer? Thanks.

What does the "SP" on the carb tops stand for?

Sorry if some can't view the pics. I copied the photos from my friends email - I don't know why some cannot see them.

My .02, A guess. The orig manifold was for two Strombergs (or Chandler Groves), Not sure what thes guys are. The additional tall piece was to increase the distance to the intake valves to get a tuned effect just like Chrysler did with their cross ram intakes in the 60's.
The extra length lowers the RPM at which the engine 'comes on'.

I had an Edlebrock Hi Throat for two Strombergs in 1960 and the extra 8" height did wonders for torque on my 47 flatty. Wish I had that car back!!!

Looks like an early Eddid Meyer water heated mainfold that someone milled down the area where the carbs mount so they could re-drill to mount the carbs backwards. for whatever reason. Theres a few differences from the one in the picture I have... could be an earlier or later version?

The carb tops were advertised in HRM and other magazines some time ago. Commonly available

Hey, thanks for all the info. My friend - the owner - is going to register on the HAMB to view this post.

Some readers have emailed me and asked me if I want to sell this. It REALLY does belong to a friend, not me, and I was just doing him a favor trying to find info on this setup. You HAMBsters did not disappoint me either. I will check with him to see if it is for sale. He does not currently have a flattie project so it very well could be for sale.

I always thought it stood for Speed Products.

The "SP" logos look the same - that's pretty convincing evidence to me, but I thought Speed Products logo contained the letters "SPE" in it.

I learn so much on the HAMB.

    True...

That's cool, I've never seen that pedal. Thought they only made the tops and breathers.

That could be the case. Or they could have changed names for a marketing standpoint?

Is there an SP part number on that pedal? Just curious because the SP tops and breathers are # SP101 and SP102.

Does anybody have scans of old SP catalogs or ads????

  30. My understanding from an old timer, now 92, was that Al Sharp and Gordie Pilkington originally came up with the SP name from their last names but decided that Speed Products was a more marketable name and that was introduced a little later, keeping the SP alive (and adding confusion for future generations).
