And herein lies the problem with ALL collector insurance. See my rant above.

This year I switched to Heacock, the people I talked to there all actually knew something about older collector type cars. I put five cars with them, all with agreed value and for alot less than some of the others companies named in this thread. The larger companies that underwrite these policies all seem to have similar fine print about the kind of driving that can be done. I'm thinking they do pretty good with this segment of the business since, for the most part, we are careful with these cars.

Haggerty. It's called agreed value. Tell them value is (whatever). They will always agree, unless your figure is too high. The higher it is the more the insurance costs. I built it, I can fix it, all I need is what the government requires, Liability.

I'll pray that you never have a shop fire or your car doesn't get stolen cuz guess what, your PL/PD basic liability coverage will not pay you a dime. Same goes for a collision where your car is not repairable by you.

See Mr Haney's recent coverage purchase above. For $167 per year I bet he'll sleep better knowing he's got great coverage if heaven forbid something happens.

This might help explain why I'm such an advocate of "Agreed Value" speciality coverage. A person never thinks it's going to happen to them,...it always happens to the "other guy", or like a couple of guys here, I can fix it myself. Well let me tell you, no one was going to fix my '47 Chevy covertible after lightening hit the building and it burned to the ground. The metal was so soft afterward you could just push your finger into the metal and the dent would stay.

I had Hagerty at the time and had a check for the full agreed value 28 days after the fire. The only reason that it even took that long was they had to wait to get a copy of the report from the fire marshal. No hassles what so ever....lots of tears, but no insurance hassles.

What if driving your rod to the auto parts store is for leisure?

Well if you want to encourage anybody that they must be fully insured, then I offer the other side. Actually each to his own, as always, but you seem to think that a casualty loss is somehow an actual loss? The tax code covers that, without prejudice.

Any car I have is repairable by me. Unless totalled, then the next practical step would be to part it out, write the loss off(unless it's already been depreciated in which case any collection on insurance would be taxable income anyhow) and haul the worst to the crusher and sell the crumpled body panels, motor components, etc, and fenders on eBay!

I've done the numbers, but no, not really, my grandpa did that for me when I was a toddler. He pointed out the pit-falls of supporting the insurance industry to me. I was brought up to be self-sufficient. In my little world (thanks Grandpa!) Insurance is a crap-shoot, where the consumer loses most of the time. I participate in the folly merely because the law requires the liability. Any coverage in excess of that is rejected out of hand. Over 90 percent of all consumers never make an insurance claim in their lifetime. Even with my meager retirement, on a fixed income, the loss one of my vehicles to disaster would merely be the loss of a material posession, hopefully I would be around to recount the experience.

This year alone, my insurance bill on all of my vehicles is over $430 less than it would be with full coverage on them. In over 50 years of licensed driving, with the money I didn't spend on car insurance, I've already saved enough to buy two new vehicles and park them for a rainy day. Or.......hold on to that cash in case I ever need it:D

Thanks for the offer of prayer. Maybe my guardian angle heard you in advance!, but if you do offer a prayer for me, include my grandkids and their journey ahead with the impending perils of socialism, one of the greatest threats to all HAMBrs and auto-hobbysts of all breeds.

Again, my preference is Haggerty, with minimal 'agreed value', simply because they don't even offer 'liability only'.

I asked my state farm agent if they covered "street rods". They said they checked with their underwriter and they told me they don't. So now I need to shop around although I don't need it right now(cars not even 80% done) it's nice to know what my options are. later shawn

I had my cpe insured with them from 92 to 04 but it was stated value not agreed value. When I hit a deer in 02 and the damage was $15,000 they payed without a problem. But I was worried when the adjuster asked me what we were going to do when he saw it. That's part of the reason, along with agreed value, why I went with Grundy when I got it back on the road after that

I've been with HAGERTY for the last 6 years. I sent them several pics of my build, the motion detection lit, alarmed, and locked garage that I keep all my goodies in. I like them. They apparently like me to the tune of $ 210.00 per year and very comprehensive coverage. My 2 cents only.

No where in my Grundy policy does it state that I can not drive my car to the auto parts store, no matter what the reason.

If your car is not covered under certain circumstances they are listed in your policy such as you are not covered on drag strips, race tracks, or during exhibtions of speed. For instance, if I lose it at the end of the dragstrip at the HAMB Drags, I'm screwed. If I get in an accident while drag racing on a city street and get a ticket for such an act, I wouldn't be covered.

Think about it for a minute, doesn't matter when or where you get in an accident, the police come and take a report. You give them the details of the accident, period. They aren't going to ask..."You on your way to the grocery store son?", "You on your way to work miss?".

I don't have a binding contract with any insurance adjuster, I have a contract with Grundy for coverage.

Grundy doesn't always send out an adjuster and I'll give you some examples where they did not.

Power Tour 2000 in Oklahoma someone tryed to steel the wheels off Dad's 37 Ford converitble in the middle of the night in the hotel parking lot. Really screwed up the running board on one side trying to get a jack under the car. Got home, call Grundy, emailed photos, with an estimate from a shop to get fixed, Grundy sent a check in the mail for the full amount shop stated it would cost to fix. No adjuster ever came out.

Fast forward a few years, same car in the garage, Dad has one side up on the floor jack, no jackstands (fool) and the car slipped off the jack and crashed to the ground. I say crashed cuz the passenger door and trunk lid were both open and it really screwed them up. Door skin was partcily ripped off at the bottom and the trunk hinge got tweeked. Again photos were sent along with an estimate from a shop to fix. Check was sent from Grundy with no adjuster involvement.

A couple of years later Dad was driving his '40 Ford coupe in Florida and pulled into a gas station and misjudged the high curb around the gas pump island. He smashed the bottom edge of the drivers front fender. Again sent photos and estimate from shop and got check from Grundy with no adjuster coming out to the house to look at it.

One more example, my '47 Chevy gets smasked while at the Grand Canyon on my way to Ca for the start of Power Tour. After I arrive home I take the car to a couple of shops (my idea to get a couple of estimates and decide on which shop would get the job). I drop my car off at the one I chose, they faxed the $5,700 estimate over to Hagerty and a check was sent to me with my name and the name of the shop. No adjuster ever visited the shop and looked at my Chevy for the smash.

A month later lighting hit the same shop with my car inside and it burned to the ground. At that point an adjuster was sent out by Hagerty to verify the fire I guess and determine the car was a total loss. I never saw him or talked to him. There was no questions to be answered at that point. Agreed vavlue is agreed value and I got a check for the whole agreed value.

My point is an adjuster is not also involved in the process and if the accident/loss is so intense that they do get involved and your car is at a shop, like my Chevy, the body shop deals with the adjuster and goes over the car with them if there is a question. I've never once talked to an adjuster.

    Others experiences might vary.:D

Just buzzed an underwriter with your particular question, and his answer was quite simple... "fully covered." :)

After reading this thread I think I'm ditching State Farm for insurance on my '54 Special and switching to Grundy. I'm getting the run-around from State Farm on getting my chipped windshield replaced. Their computer system doesn't list you can get a replacement windsheild for a Special 2 door hartop and must not have an interchange to look at to know that a windshield from a Century 2 door hartop (which they can get a windsheild for) will fit my car. It's been almost a month now since I went and talked to my State Farm agent about the windsheild and I've heard nothing back from them on if they are going to fix it or not.

I recently submitted my one and only claim to Grundy. I was hit by an uninsured driver, Called Grundy they answered all my questions, damage appraiser was there within 2 days check was in the mailbox 4 days later!
I recently retired as a damage appraiser for a large Auto insurer and I can honestly say I couldn't have been treated better! I'll never complain about my rates and service w/Grundy!

When I insured with Hagery about 6 yrs ago the agent came over and took photos of the cars IN the Garage. When I added a 3rd car they came and took another picture. I had forgotten this untill yesterday when I went over to make a value change and the 3 Polaroid pictures were in my file.

  22. I have my house, daily drivers, HD's, and 32 hot rod with State Farm. On my State Farm declarations page for the 32 it states "Agreed Value of...$$$."

I pay $180.00/year for limited milage and only covered for parades/car shows.

I have asked my agent many times if that agreed value is what the payout would be and I was assured it was.

But I am not going to wait until something happens to find out the hard way that it is not.

After reading through this thread I applied for and just received an online quote and submitted the OK to Grundy. Now I guess I have to wait for them to contact me. I'll be paying a hundred bucks more per year, but it will be worth knowing I'm covered in case some d-head hits me. I should have switched this a long time ago.

Thanks to Becky and all here for getting my A$$ in gear on this one.

Just read this entire thread about insurance because I need to insure my 37 Ford. It's finally going on the road this year. I am going with Grundy. The quote I got was great. Everyone's positive comments helped but the thing that really sold me is that Becky is part of the HAMB community. She responds to people's questions on here where it can help a lot of people. I'm impressed.

Someone mentioned in an older thread "they should reincorporate as State Farm of Florida ...". That is a great comment, but about two decades too late. They did that after hurricane Andrew nearly took down the whole company. Losses in FL are paid for by premiums from FL. My father was a SF agent for 20 years, and I have had the company line drilled into me for most of that time. My mother's homeowners insurance (in FL) has doubled in the past five years. With no claims. I think SF's threat to pull out is a power play, but we will see. As consumers, we all have to vote with our wallets.
