I think there was a later second commercial where the father ends up driving the souped up car "borrows" it from the kid for some reason and of course the old man is having a blast with it !
Anyone remember the old lady and her gran daughter road testing a new Duster? Granny "And it's got torsion bobbers for superspension"
I remember when they used to use a helicopter to plant a new Chevy convertible, and Dinah Shore on top of a craggy rock in Utah or on a rock just above the surf off Big Sur and she's sing "See the USA, In a Chevrolet..." Today, you'd just figure they green screened it..
Remember Paul Revere and the Raiders band doing the GTO Judge commercial? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Vrc2b5qtLk how about the Dodge Rebellion Ads? HRP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXR_wm0ugQw
How 'bout those old driver education "films" (before VCRS). While everyone was being bored to tears, I was ooohhh-ing and aaaahhh-ing over all those vintage cars. I think those old films are available on DVD now??
It was a Javelin in the TV ad. A kid gets a new Javelin and then the next day he comes home and he has added a 6-71 huffer and big tires. His father was furious. I was at a Can Am roadrace at M.I.S. (I don't think they have used the road course in years) and that car was there being driven around the infield. It was AWESOME! Must have been 1970 - right after I saw it on TV. Probably driven by some factory people. I heard later that it might have been a hollow blower with a carb inside and a noisy Pete Jackson gear drive. it had loud exhaust. It was VERY convincing. I actually found one picture of it a few years ago. I have never talked to one other soul (until now) that remembers the car or the TV ad. In the picture, as at M.I.S., the car has the tagline from the commercial on it's flanks. "BUTCHERED? It's a great car Dad; I only made it better!"
Love this thread, have been collecting car commercials for many years. I don't do youtube, but if you can find the 1968 Pontiac GTO "Bonnie & Clyde" commercial, it is worth watching. I have several hundred, and it is my all-time favorite. Jon.
Here is the '69 Pontiac line-up. What a beautiful variety of cars for the former manufacturer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSQSuZUkVtE
A hip "break away" Pontiac commercial. I own(ed) 2 of the cars advertised; Grand Prix and GTO. That Grand Prix had a cool cockpit and a crazy long hood, not to forget those "rat trap" door handles. I still have the GTO.
This is off topic, but funny in a goofy way. Just think, Phil was doing these singing Pontiacs since the sixties (what I do remember) and maybe as early as the late fifties (he said the 20th year). http://youtu.be/LeOY7kWSlzI
