49 Plymouth coupe is victim of a storm....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 47Plym, May 16, 2009.

  1. Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen.
I'm looking around the area for another body.....and going to keep this one
sitting around for a while. Has a good 54 model flathead 6 and most all the
stainless trim is good. Seats have been redone in the past and are good.
Had a glass shop remove the rear window since it's curved glass and getting
    harder to find.

It was a pretty solid old car.....but, stuff happens. Will just try to make the
    best of it.
The owner of the tree.....next door neighbor.....is trying to sell it to a logger
but so far not having much luck. So I don't know how long before it will be
removed from the car. But, the car won't be going any place anyway.

Son in law will probably bring his porta power when he visits next from Kansas City.
We will try to raise the roof back up some so I can at least get the seats out.

Have thought about hiring a wrecker to come lift the tree and remove the car.
Then the man can take as long as he wants to mess with it.

The car is not sitting in my yard, but in the yard of a friend in a nearby town.

If he's truly neighborly, he should toss some of the money your way. If he agrees to split the sale of the wood, maybe you can help find someone to bid on it.

That storm came through here(wichita) and trashed alot of stuff too. I feel bad for you. I have a 47 project myself. I just got it and it needs alot, but its such a cool little car. On another note, if you do decide to part it out, there are some things I could use. Maybe you could recoop some of your investment. good luck with it either way.

I think your neighbour or his insurance needs to cover your damages.

Your neighbor lost ownership of that tree when it appeared in your yard atop your car in my opinion.
If HE owns the tree, HE, or his insurer, owes you for the damages to your car.

Forget the loggers, there's buyers who pay big money for walnut to make custom rifle stocks. Looks like a lot of damage in front of the doors & such.

  14. Try home owners insurance to cover damage.. Dude that is a heart breaker. Parked, apart or not I get insurance. Collector insurance aint that expensive

  15. Again, homeowner's coverage does NOT include damage to vehicles, period. My shop collapsed on three of my cars in a tornado, six years ago. The two that had AUTO insurance (comp/coll) were covered under the AUTO policy. The one that had liability only, was MY loss. A '53 Dodge truck I had (no AUTO coverage) was hit hard by a tree - again, no homeowner's coverage of any kind handled that. Had to suck that one up. Homeowner's coverage does NOT cover vehicles at all. The neighbor's coverage won't do any good, either.

Think about it --- if your homeowner's insurance covered your vehicles against loss like a tree falling on it, there would be no reason to insure a vehicle that is stored or parked, and everybody and their dog would file claims against their homeowner's policy for vehicle damages. That is why you have AUTO insurance and HOME insurance. Doesn't make much sense for a vehicle to be covered under a homeowner's policy, does it?

I did count both vehicles on my taxes as what are called "uninsured losses", however.

That really sucks! Makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it. But, I'm with the 235Kid - whack off the remains of the top, straighten out the rest, put on a cool Carson top, and you will have a really awesome car.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

    I feel for you man.
I hope you can find a body, but if not, a strange idea took hold. Cut off the top, straighten what's left, and make it a 2 door phantom woodie with the damn tree! That'll teach it!

  22. Not his home owners insurance, the guy who's tree it was. It would be the liability of the tree owner. wouldn't it?

As said many times above. Sucky thing to happen, but chop off that top and straighten her up with topless.

  24. I wish it was.....but the reality is, it's not his fault. He didn't cause the
wind storm, the tree was alive and in good condition at the time. The wind actually
uprooted it....due to the wet, soft ground - just blew it over.

I work in an insurance agency......they pretty much all have the same type rule
about such things. The poor guy who's the victim has to use his car or
house insurance to fix the damage. Of course I hadn't yet put any
insurance on the car since it wasn't quite drivable. So, I'll just have to
    eat this deal.

Had the rear window (a curved glass) removed by a glass company, as
they're getting harder to find. There are only two other good glasses
left......right rear, and driver's door wing window. Those are flat, so are
fairly easy to get them cut. Pretty much everything but the top and
doors is re-usable. At least as far as I can tell right now. Will have to
look it over farther when the tree gets removed.

The quarters, behind each door, are bowed out some. It knocked the
air out of the right rear tire. The area around the top of the trunk lid
on the drivers side appears bent down some, exposed the edge of the
lid a bit. And some slight damage to the rear top corner of the right
    front fender.

Who'd a thought about such a thing happening??
Never had such a deal before. Just shows we're not
immune to anything. Had the car been at my own house,
it would have not been near such a big tree. But, it was
where it was for some work to be done.....but not by the
guy whose house it was at.

remove the body except for the cowl and front fenders/hood and build yourself a woody.

X2 a woody coupe would be sweet

  28. Sedans those years are pretty common. I'd replace the top of the cowl and windshield frame and go convertible, myself. Or use it for the excuse to get crazy and put a whole other top on it. Maybe go 3-window with a healthy chop? Go hardtop with like a 53-54 Dodge/Plymouth top? Whatever looks best in Photoshop I suppose.
