No, I haven't heard on that one. Hopefully it's in a museum or at least a private collector. It would be a shame to cut up that one.
It's so nice, I hate to see it cut up. Bet a well heeled WWII collector will out bid the Hot Rodders (unless Jay Leno, Bruce M., etc. really want it).
Zibo, The tank your referring to is one of the small 10ft steel tanks, and is currently owned by a Hamber. John aka "Acme speed shop"
I was at an estate auction last year that had half of an aluminum tank that was about 12' long for sale. It sold for $30. I almost bought it but then what would I do with half of a tank. Plus I did not have a way to get it home that day.
Looks like the the Warbird crowd has jumped into the battle. Maybe the "Cat in the Hat" would like it to decorate the hanger where his P-51 is parked.
What I wonder about these things, is Who made them and what became of the tooling? If the dies still exist, it's nothing to start popping them out again.
Got any data plates on it anywhere???? The wing tanks on an F-4 were 370 gal..........Centerline tank was a 600 gal......If you can find a quantity placard, it may narrow it down for you.
From the stories I've heard the older fellas tell, the giant press with the tank dies sat in a field in Burbank for years. It was an empty lot near the old Lockheed plant. It disappeared sometime in the 70's or 80's. Probably got scrapped. Sure would have liked to see it.
Im pretty sure that tank is not from a p-38. P-38s, from my knowledge, are steel, a little over 10 feet long, and a little over 6 feet in circ. I found mine sitting in the woods about a 1/4 mile away from my house, so they're still out there!
P-38's mainly ran 2 of the smaller 10 ft steel tanks, but the larger 13 ft was an option for longer flights needing even more fuel capacity. I am working a post to describe all the different ww2 tanks, and the planes that used them. Believe it or not, the P-38 had an "Ambulance" model that used 2 of the large size p-38 droptanks, modified to transport people inside. It had a clear plexi nose. I have one at the shop, it's pretty unbelievable. I will try my best to have my bellytank post finished by this weekend.
What are these a pair from about 13 feet long? Details ? Let me know I WAS TOLD THE NOSE AND TAIL UNSCREW LIKE A OIL FILTER?
Bobby you're a nut! I gotta visit your shop someday but you'd have to kick me out you've got so much cool stuff to check out, or let me sleep in the p-38 ambulance tank or something with a bottle of joe crow traditional...! travis
Uh,.. Zurferjoe, You might want to go introduce yourself before you go posting comments like that. Welcome to the board, but please go here first: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=18
