I had a set of Lucas "pencil beam flamethrowers", but when one burned out and I discovered they were $70 each to replace..... Well, I dont use 'em anymore.

When I first got them, they were $12 each, but that was back in the late 70's... Big $$$ back then, when a standard sealed beam was about $3

I have run the old pencil-beams on a few sports cars - quite pricey and not anywhere as good as surplus 14V landing lights.

Had a set of PL700s I installed in my Excalibur - buddy of mine backed into it and broke one of the lenses (they were not sealed beam) - he was stunned by the replacement price (PL700s were a high-zoot tri-bar lamp).

The best driving lights 'back then' were PA Jod and Hella - this was just as Iodide bulbs were coming out - put sealed beams to shame....but the US laws at the time required sealed beams....guess I've been a scofflaw my whole life.

Is this what you mean? We always called them Flame Throwers. This my 62 vette. I converted the bulbs to a new style and they give a LOT of light.
