Thanks for all the great shots. One of the cool things at Tri City Dragway near Saginaw, MI back in the day they would call for some street cars to use as tow cars for the circuit F/C shows. What a great way for the fans to be involved as 'honorary' crew for the night. I had the pleasure of being Paul Stefansky's Super Stang tow car/'crew' when he was in town-he wisely didn't let me anywhere near the car with a wrench! I don't know if other strips around the country did that same thing, it looks like in a lot of the pictures they were using their ramp trucks. I have so much respect for the booked in touring guys on the road all the time, eking out a living doing what they loved.

  2. I found this photo a few years ago on E-bay. It's from the 1/8th mile track in Flemington, NJ. It's probably from the 1963-1966 era as I believe the track shut down by 1967.
I'm hoping one of the east coast racers will be able to ID both the owner of the Fiat altered and some details on the vreu strange modified roadster in the right lane.

Thanks for the photos of Gas Ronda. While I was at IRP, I recall getting a phone call during the U.S. Nationals. It was Paul Harvey, and he said, "John, Ronda's at the back gate and the girls don't know who he is."

I called back there and said if nobody knew him, put him on my list and make sure he gets taken care of.

Turned out he hadn't planned on being there, but was in town and decided to show up. I considered it an honor to help. All I could figure was that the older "girls" on the back gate must have been on break.

Got these gems from a good friend Ritchie Adamski - taken in the late 60's at Bremerton Raceway.

  9. Hi All.

I've finally made it onto the thread, now that we're on broadband, and I hate it after only 250 pages. I'm supposed to be doing some work for a couple of magazines and all I've done is empty boxes of tissues as I clean up myself and the computer desk as I go through the images on what is undoubtedly the greatest thread the web has ever seen.

Over the years I'll be posting photos, both old and new. Thanks to some of the other guys on here who have already used my images, as it shows they are appreciated. Keep doing it guys, as it will save me a bit of time.

Royalshifter, you must have the world's largest drags magazine and photo collection. I would love to spend a few years going through them all. In the meantime I'll be content drooling over them as you put them here. Thanks.

Here are a couple of shots to start with.

I got to see the Hurst Hemi Underglass in Chandler, IN once. He crashed into the rail!

  12. Thanks Ross.

I knew you had some great old shots but I didn't realize just how many you had.

I'll have to give you a call over the next few days and catch up. It's been too long between chats.

For those of you who have seen Ross' posts on this thread but don't know what he used to drive, here are a few shots of his 'most famous' ride, a 4-71 blown, 186-cube, Holden 6 pack RED in the late 70s/early 80s.

    Cheers.

THANK YOU! Tremendous posting of my favorite drag strip. Spent 4 years in the late 80's/early 90's working with the Handlers, the all volunteer, non-profit group that has operated Bremerton Raceway since 59'. Prior to that a couple of other groups ran it, such as the Olympia Timing Association since about 53'. It's been updated quite a bit in the last few years; jersey barriers, in-ground wiring for timing equipment and P.A. systems, score boards at the finish line, a first rate food service, and concrete launch pads. When I was with the Handlers, it was still COMPLETELY portable. Everything had to be installed/taken down with each race, a huge undertaking. We could leave NOTHING standing near the FAA condemned runway at Bremerton National Airport. This year marks 50 years for Bremerton Raceway and the Handlers Racing Association. Long live Bremerton Raceway and the Handlers. Butch/56sedandelivery.

I was at Bristol at the 1965 NHRA Spring Nationals when the Hurst Hemi-Under-Glass made is debut.

    Those were the days.

  16. Thanks Royalshifter.

Looks like I'm still not working!

A couple of shots on how NOT to treat a good-looking T.
