I may have an opportunity to grab a real rough 39/40 Ford 4 door sedan. I'm not big on 4 doors, but I am thinking it would be cool with the top off. I know it would need tons of bracing etc.,...thoughts??? Also, I know there is at least 1 HAMB'r I have seen with a similar car. If y'all know of any pics of this car or other sedans with the top-off treatment, post away...Thanks for the help!
I've got a replacement '40 4 dr. roof in my back yard, too! Wow, they're everywhere! Seriously, if you cut off the old roof, save it. There are some valuable compound curved panels and drip rails that someone might need. Don't forget to harvest the inside trim around the windows as they are sought after. I kept this roof to replace the rear door panel on my '40 sedan delivery if needed.
I built my 40 merc 4 dr...didn't like it as a slammed 4 dr so off with the top and then converted it to 2 doors...didn't like the trunk so it got leaned forward some at the top....hell of a lot of work and no I didn't add any bracing to the frame...just make sure the floor and body mounts are in great shape. I used parts of the roof to fill the top on a F1 when we chopped it...nice shape.
If it's hacked I would agree. You need to finish the header, roll the tops of the doors and cap the rear section. I have seen a couple that turned out really nice... Shit, the one in my avatar may be losing it's lid someday.
mine has been posted 100's of times.. heres a link to my "build" started about 10 years ago.. IN A TENT.. http://public.fotki.com/sawzallshop/sawzalls-rides-past/my_40_ford_converta/ The green one you posted a link of is a real 39 convertible sedan.. I couldnt afford, nor find, a real one at the time..
I also have a roof section from a mid 40's ford if anyone needs one for a chop project or something. It came off a 2-door 46'. You need one, give me a hollar, I'm in the south.
