How much did you spend on your steering wheel?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harris, Oct 26, 2008.

  1. Bought the sterring wheel with horn ring for 75$, fixed the cracks and got it painted for free.

Same here, about $75 on a silver flake one, from one of the major suppliers. It is not like I am stuck with it forever, if I see another I like I can buy that, no big deal.

You should really do a tech post with pics on this. That would be great!

Paid about $300 for a billet one, joined the hamb, then traded it for a 65 impala wheel my buddy got for less than $20 at a swapmeet. I figure the loss is a good smack in the head for buying billet in the first place. This is now sanded ready for paint at my buddy's booth. pics are from an old thread. Peace..

I have about $300 into my factory custom cab wheel on the F-100...I picked up an extra wheel/horn ring at a swap meet, then had a machine shop work it over to fit on my ididit tilt column...Now all I have to do is repair the cracks and repaint it...

Sorry, no pics... Did you have them install a Chev. splined hub? If so how? thanks

About $35 for this one I think. '49 Pontiac. A few more bucks for the epoxy I used to fix the cracks and the hubcap I made into a center cap.

And $1 for the green flake wheel in the Olds.

I think I spent over $1000 so far working on a finish for my Wheel
and its not done yet:rolleyes: but At least It looks like it will work. Now I just gotta do it:D.
Gold mother of Pearl... Here is a clip that kind of shows the finish
on an old peice of plastic, It would look better on a round surface like a Wheel though.
    http://rbicycle.iserver.net/photos/video/pearlz.wmv
its thick coating so you lose some details in the wheel like fine groves.
But the depth of the finish is needed to get the Mother Of pearl Effect..
Any color of pearl can be done... Fun stuff but time consuming .

That's a good deal. I saw a guy buy an entire (rough) coupe for $5000 just to get the wheel.

  10. That was it.

Now all you gotta do is drill three holes....;)

  11. $37 on eBay
    $10 for filler and paint
    $18 for new horn internals

Around $20 for a decent set of vise grips!!:D But I once scored 3 moon flake wheels at a swap meet for 30 bucks and all were nice pieces! Sold them off one by one then went out and bought a cheap wheel for my ride haha

Found a junked 65 Riv in a boneyard that had a perfect wood wheel complete. The owner would not sell just the wheel, instead sold the whole car for $400. Took the wheel and a few othe salvagable parts. The wheel sells for $700-1000 on e-bay!

I've got a column that was a Chrysler version of the tilting/telescoping GM column of the 70/80's. I spent about $300 for a LeCarra drilled, 3 spoke wheel and the special adapter that had to be sent back and re-machined to fit. (LeCarra did the additional work for me
    without charge-thanks, LeCarra!).

I routinely see what I guess are 59 Impala wheels going for 200-300 depending on condition. I'm not too sharp on Chevys. I have seen a couple wheels I'd drop a grand on, all NFS at the time. My hot rod Galaxie right now has a thick, old, heavy chrome chain steering wheel. I traded a wimpier, newer chain wheel to New York Bobby for it. He was gonna use it as a footer for a gumball machine, so no loss. I think I paid a tenner for the wimpy one at a flea market. My Ford is period-correct late 60s SFV lowrider and the chain wheel fits. I'm currently experimenting with a brodie knob for it.

  23. Just the wheel, tilt column, hideaway lights and a few other pieces could net you $3000.

But I have yet to spend big bucks on a steering wheel for any car. I saved a '64 Skylark wheel to put in my other Suburban - big wheel, but in that truck it needs a tilt column to use - one of those waiting for me to install it, too.

I think my 40 wheel was about $175.00 but a 4 spoke Bell is on the drool list.

I think $20.00 on ebay. I got my tailgate from the same guy for $25.00 I think and it was perfect. I think it's an aftermarket tailgate. I had to drive to KC to get it and got the flu and puked Chinese food on the way back but all in all worth it.

I painted the wheel with Duplicolor rattle can metal flake paint. Two cans @ $10.00 each.
