I've got a guy who I work for who has a new 355 and a 512 and put custom exhaust on them both. They sound even more throaty and just nasty, but he drives the shit out of them and whinds those things up in each gear. I love those Euro sport sounds as much as my hot rods.

Very cool. I love how the 250 GTO appears in the mirrors. Ryan is right. My understanding is that most Ferrari owners say that "Ferraris are meant to be driven!"

That reminds me of my bud and I 25 years ago. Except the road was rt 47 in WV and I had an MGB and my friend had a TR-6.

We still had as much fun. I can still see the feathers flying when a chicken ran out in front of me.

The best thing about cool old film footage is it really seems to match my memories. The burned out colors as well as the overly rich colors. Kind of like comparing video to film. I wish I naturally saw everything in Technicolor!

....awesome cars AND on Mullholland AND in the late 60's early 70, wow. I've got a Mullholland story but it involves a couple of dumped mini trucks at night and no Ferraris, death defying, but not the same....

It was interesting to see all the cars start up that race in the video metalshapes posted, they all seemed to rev up and had some clutch work to get them off the line, they all did it the same way. I bet driving those cars is unlike driving anything else, If I had 18 million Id love to learn how.

Excellent video! Anyone who claims they don't like Ferraris has probably never driven one. My ex-girlfriends father has a 456 GTA which is a 2+2 with a front mounted V12 which costs about 250 large (kinda looks like a modern interpretation of a daytona). He handed me the keys one night and I said "this may be too much temptation for me", he replied "that's what its for, don't crash or get arrested". Needless to say that car on the open road was some good times! The V12 feels like its electro-magnetic, so smooth yet will pin your back to the seat even when you jump on it already over 100. At idle it does not sound all that amazing, but once its screaming its a symphony of pure joy that seems to beckon you to push it harder.

Agreed. I grew up around a couple of 50's Ferrari's for before my grandfather passed away a few years ago and they are quite simply awesome!

Narrator is Stuart Baumgard, ex owner of the GTO (s/n 3987GT) seen in the movie. Car is now with Ralph Lauren.

Yep, REALLY refreshing change from the Mountain Dew, MTV, in yo' face video production style(?) of today.

Warren Miller ruled, so did Bruce Brown. Seemed like achievement trumped image back then, maybe just my perception.

  18. Sorta reminds me of the classic C'etait in Paris where a guy drives Ferrari about a million miles per hour through Paris early in the morning , dodging cars , startled pedistrians and even onto curb. Too muxh fun . Sheesh , those were the days

Ryan your wrong ..... It's not different than any hot rodder playing with the next

No different than shut'n-down Alfa Monza on a rainy night cause I could (Screw Pink Floyd) said under my breath.

No different than two guys on Cherry Ave in Long Beach racing.

    No different at all!!!

Yes that's life and as Harvey said 'Everything else is waiting' :)

  21. That would be "Nick Mason",who not only uses them, but allows others to drive them too! Many of the cars used on "Victory by Design",belong to Mason. Many also have been used for driving articles in various UK publications.;) Thanks for the post Ryan and others,it's "Hot Rod Viagra"in my opinion, never O/T.:D "Traditional Italian Hot Rods"!!!

This 1957 Ferrari 250 is one that I worked on in my shop before retiring last year. The engine stalled and the owner could not get it started so he cranked it in gear in an effort to get it into his garage. In doing so, he melted the positive battery cable and damn near burned the car to the ground.

And we all bitch about 32' values. That's 12,000,000 worth of cars in the first video and the line is only three cars long. Imagine how long of a line $12,000,000 in 32' fords would be. :)

It's only money who gives a shit. :)

I had a guy take a 'white knuckle' ride with me once. ''What if you crash this?'' He asked

My answer ...... It was junk when I got it! If the wreck doesn't kill me I'll fix it again.

You have a lot better chance of getting your banker to loan you the money to fiix these things than a 32 Ford...... that's just the truth. AND if you own racing history and don't test it in anger ......... well your a pussy and should play golf and drive a Nomad!

A friend of mine who's into 50s-60s European sports cars, and regularly runs them with his friends (and is generous to allow me to co-pilot!) described this sound, if I recall correctly, as "ripping fabric."

I dig how true car guys (like I'd consider myself) get that recognizable dumb little kid grin on their face when they hear a distinctive exhaust note.

I cant believe I missed this....it's like a religious experience.

Where Ferraris relatively inexpensive then? Seems unlikely that these kids had such exotic cars, but it is LA. And sometimes nothing makes sense in LA....

It's true. Not too different at all.

  28. Although the GTO is my favortie all time Ferarri, and certainly the meanest looking, I'd say the Lusso was the sexiest!
    this was Steve McQueen's

I think it was old Super 8 film so there was no sound recorded on those old cameras

  29. Ferraris are magnificent beasts!!! The only time I've ever had the opportunity to sit in one or drive one is when I used to move cars around at classic auctions. I've actually driven four Ferraris - granted, that was from the auction block to their parking place in either the "sold" barn or the "didn't sell" barn, and at less than twenty miles per hour, but even at that slow speed, they were so much fun. You sit your butt in a Ferrari, and everyone looks at you driving around! These things really are sex on wheels! And that V-12! If you have never had the pleasure of hearing one up close and personal, there really is nothing like it!

Everything is starting to make sense if you spend a decade or two in L.A.:D:eek:
