    My ID tags dont say what the original engine or transmission or anything like that was. I am trying to find what engine and transmission to go into a 1951 Ford F-1. I think it is a Flathead V8, however I am not too sure which one exactly. Secondly what transmission do I need?

    What came in it originally is only a concern if you are "restoring" it to "showroom original".

    If you are building a rod out of it put anything you want and can afford in it. It's nice to keep one all Ford though.

    You want to know which engine came with your truck out of curiosity? Because you can put anything in there that physically fits. This here's a hot rod message board.

    I'd go Allison, 'course, it'll have to go out back.....

    there were only two options for engine choices in 1951
    226ci 6cyl or the 239 8cyl , both were flatmotors
    your vin # should tell you what motor was in it
    7H = 226ci
    8R =239ci
    transmission was more than likely a 3sp side shift

    above the grille there should be a v-8 emblem if it was v-8

  16. My 51 F-1 (actually mines a mercury but same really) came with a 239 ci flathead v8 (8ba). These engines were pretty much identical from 1949 to 1952. As for transmissions mine has the 3 speed light duty remote shift (3 on the tree).

    Check your VIN Code: (Sample) 87HC 139260
    8 is Model Year (8 - 1948, etc)
    7H is Engine Code
    C is Model Line (C= 1/2 ton, Y = 3/4 ton, T = 1 ton)
    139260 is production sequence

    The spec chart from my shop manual states the following engine types from 1949-1952, but they would all be interchangable for 1949-1952 trucks.

    Code CI Cylinders HP Years
    7H 226 6 90 1948-1950
    H 226 6 90 1951
    D 215 6 101 1952-1954
    8R 239 8 100 1948-1950
    R 239 8 110 1951-1953

    Transmissions available in F-1:
    3-Speed Light Duty (1949-1950 only)
    3-Speed Light Duty Remote Shift (1951 only)
    3-Speed Heavy Duty Center Shift (Optional on F-1,F-2,F-3,F-4,F-5,F-5 COE, bus)
    4-Speed (Optional on F-1)

    Most popular engine is probably the 1951 239 ci with a 3sp remote shift.

    Or how about a 425 olds with a 425 olds transaxle of course mounted in the bed...turn the engine compartment into a trunk...Then you have a rear engined F1 With a 425/425 Combo....

    If it was me building it I would wedge a my 320 Straight 8 buick in there with some type of GM od trans...Imagine the looks from people when the hood is open on it....Is that a six? Count the plugs....1...2...3...4...5...6...............7...........8?!?!?!?!?!?

    I had a big block Chevy slated for mine but the "current" price of dinasaur squeezings has me thinking the ZZ4 350 sitting in the shop and a 700r4 would be a better choice. Whatever you like is the right choice and an origional drivetrain would make a nice 'round town cruiser.

    This page suggests that you should have a tag in the middle of the cowl under the hood. This tag will have the info that you need. If this tag is missing, it doesn't look like the VIN will give you the info that you need. But your VIN should be stamped somewhere on the frame rail under the hood. For that year I have seen it on the passenger side rail anywhere between the cab and the radiator cross member and I have seen it on the radiator cross member.

    392 Chrysler, 4 speed and change the rear to a 9" from a 60 ford truck. You will not only be happy but everybody else as well who sees it.

    8RT if it was a V8. If it has a shifter on the column, it was a side shifted 3 speed. But like everyone else mentioned you can stuff just about anything under the hood on them. I saw one with a 455 Olds. Lots of them have small block Chevys these days, as well as back in the 60's.
